John, I am sorry I cannot make the trip to Waterloo this week. I would have liked to make the Funeral. So sad for you guys - John, Dave, Carolyn, and Julie. Our sincerest condolences go out to Ruth & John's family. Ruth was a wonderful lady indeed. Although we didn't get to know her for very long, her and John made us feel welcome right from the start when we moved in across the street a year ago. From the homemade jam, baskets of cherry tomatoes, gardening tips or just letting us know about things going on in community, the warmth was always there. But what I will miss about her the most is that cheerful wave and the great big smile every time I'd see her either from my front window or from the front lawn. It's just not the same around here without her and she will be truly missed.

Ruth was my wonderful Godmother and I have many wonderful memories of her as I was growing up. One of my favourites is the following story, I thought I would share with everyone. I was in my early 20s and living in Toronto and just tired of the city and needed a break. Ruth and John invited me out for the weekend. I was so excited to get out of the city. But I'd done something to hurt my back, it was killing me. Ruth listened to me moan and told me that she had the perfect solution. I was to climb up a ladder and pick fruit from a tree (for some reason I think it was a cherry tree, could be wrong on that). I was highly sceptical of this as a medical solution but she reassured me that it was the perfect activity for a sore back. Now, I'm pretty gullible so I did as I was told. I climbed up the ladder and picked fruit from one of her trees for an entire afternoon. The strange thing is within about two hours her "cure" worked! With all the stretching I'd done to reach the fruit I'd worked out the nasty kink in my back and I came down from the ladder completely amazed that it had worked. I think Ruth was amazed too! So we had fresh pie that night for supper and I went back to Toronto with a pie and a cured back!
I loved Ruth so much. She was always fun and loved to laugh. I will miss her dynamic personality so very much. She never missed my birthday or christmas and would call me at random times, but it seemed to me that every time she would randomly call it would be when I needed cheering up. What a wonderful influence she has been in my life. I am very very grateful to have had the opportunity to know and love her. She will be missed so very much.
