It's been a while since I've been in high school, but I remember your gr 12 English class I was in like it was yesterday. You had a great sarcastic sense of humour, and you were a very understanding and approachable teacher. Cameron Heights lost a big part of itself the past couple of weeks. Rest in peace, Mr. Marshall.

During my first year of teaching at Cameron Heights, Howard was always so kind to me. He used his kindness as motivation with his students. The best piece of advice he gave me was to "kill them with kindness." That message has stayed with me during my teaching career and is something that I employ every day.

Mr. Marshall was an English teacher rivalled by none in his passion for the language. He spoke eloquently, with fervent fondness for the beauty of words. He passed this quality on to so many of his students that his legacy is sure to live on forever in our hearts and minds. It is with great sadness that we lay him to rest, but with absolute respect that we look back on his life, and understand how he impacted those around him.

My sincerest condolences go to the Marshall family. I am truly devastated by what has happened... I had the honour of having Mr. Marshall as my grade nine teacher and again as my grade eleven teacher. He was the most wonderful teacher I have ever had and he was the reason I actually came to enjoy English class. His wit was delightful, especially at the times when he, himself, would burst out laughing at it. He was someone I could joke around with, like the time when he and I were discussing our latest injuries, and he said if anyone hurt me again at rugby that he would come and tell them to back off and leave me alone, and then cheer me on at my games. He cared so much, about everyone and never did he actually get angry at us, but he would always laugh with us. "To be blunt with you..." thank you for everything Mr. Marshall. As you would always say "Take care," at the end of each class, I would like to say the same to your family. Take care and thank you. Rest in peace, Mr. Marshall, you will always be remembered and loved.

Mr. Marshall was a man I will most remember for his passion for teaching and passing on knowledge to my genereation. He made English my favourite class, and taught me to better appreciate all of language. I decided last year, that I want him to be my mentor, and to help me through the difficult times of school. In a few months he taught me more about my writing and reading skills than I learned in the previous 16 years of my life. He gave me the goals of hopefully someday being able to pass this on to another student, to inspire kids in an English class, and to become a more focused and mature individual. Mr. Marshall was more to me than just a teacher, he was someone I looked up to in every way possible.

I cant even describe how different the school feels without Mr.Marshall. Walking through the third floor isn't the same anymore. Words cannot even begin to describe the commitment Marshall had to each and every class he had. I cant even begin to fathom an English class without him. His presence in the F hall will be missed. Even if I didn't show it, he made my day just that little bit brighter. May his memory live on every time we drink from the best fountain in the school. Marshall's fountain.

Howard extended his intelligence to figuring out the best way to support our Special Education students. He was sensitive to their learning, as well as emotional needs. I often overheard him sharing his own experiences, very generally, in order to help students work through their physical illnesses, intellectual challenges, as well as recently, a parental loss. He taught with a beautiful mix of brain and heart! As a colleague we could joke with quick, razor sharp exchanges blanketed with mutual respect. In a building of over 2000 people, his presence is noticeable missed. We will speak of you, Howard, with twinkling eyes!

I look back at my classes with Mr. Marshall as examples of why becoming a teacher is my goal. He was passionate in a contagious way, and made the most dry material something fascinating and managed to keep a class of 30 often goofy and impatiant teenagers captivated and inspired. I remember Mr. Marshall as someone whose dry and brilliant sense of humor never failed to captivate his students and made English a fantastic class. For a full year and a half after I finished my last class with him, Mr. Marshall always had a grin and a quip every time I passed him in the hallway. It is proof of how engaging and memorable he was, that my mother to this day remembers three years ago meeting him for less than five minutes in a parent teacher conference. In short, Mr. Marshall was, and remains, an inspiration to his students (past and present) and someone I know made a true impact on me as both an English student and as a person. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends in this difficult time.
