Hi,
I did not know Mr. Cairns but recently have read his book about his life as a kid during the Great Depression. I have been reading this book out loud with my student, who is an 11 year old boy. We have greatly enjoyed Mr. Cairns writing and his stories. We can see that he must have been a very wonderful and interesting person. We are sure that he is greatly missed but are thankful to him for writing down these stories of his life because they help us understand what it was like to be a kid way back then.

Huge influence on me and I loved him dearly - never will forget his constant wit and when urging me on saying, "If you are looking for sympathy, you can find it in the dictionary."

Thank You Chon for appreciating the flowers and plants and trees everywhere you went. You would sit and enjoy our colours and shapes never wanting to give us a label, just calling us all "wonderful wonderful" and "lovely lovely". You planted prepared soil for us lovingly watered us in gardens and flowerboxes. You walked through the gardens carefully choosing wildflowers to make big bouquets to spread happiness in your home. You worked with trees all your life and took some of us with chainsaw, handsaw and axe so we could share our warmth with you. You had a deep appreciation for our quality of just being, from our roadside varieties to our managed greenhouse varieties. Much honour travels with you..

Thank you Chon for appreciating us, feeding us and writing anecdotes about us. We were crazy about you!.. Dalai Midnight Pussmajig, Caramel, Sarka, Squirrel Nutkin, assorted baby birds and birds of flight, sudden deer in a field or by the road, raccoons and chipmunks who shared your home and your bowl of nuts, groundhogs who shared the gardens you made.. and many more of earlier years.

I am honoured to know of John Cairns through stories from his incredible daughter. Sandra.
I wished I would've had the opportunity to meet him in person. As one's legacy can be seen in one's children, John will live on. Sandra is an inspiration to me in education, culture, advocacy and life. As a remote northern nurse, I recognize connection, meaning and relevance is key in determinants of health and education. It is obvious that Sandra was gifted/blessed with this through her parents, early in life
Safe and peaceful travels to John Cairns and healing memories to all.
With respect, from Aklavik, Northwest Territories

John seemed to have a light heart, a keen enjoyment of life and ideas, a warm and enthusiastic partnership with Beverley. What a blessing to have known him.

I am almost finished reading My Life as a Kid...What a joy it has been..John was born 9 days before my dad Oliver Ridsdale {born in Galt].Although he live on the other side of Galt I'm sure they knew each other. They shared the same joy of sports, the river ,paper routes etc. and a carefree childhood. My mom Lenore Nearingburg lived on Elloitt Street.and attended Central School. She was a year younger but had many brothers and sisters who were older .The opening page warms my heart as I too find it difficult when you must explain about your birthplace as Galt.Although born in 43 my times growing up in Galt were similar but without the depression. The book has rekindled many wonderful memories and I will share it with friends and family. We are as proud as he to be from GALT.
my sympathy to his family

I feel very lucky to have met and conversed many times with John. He and his wife Beverley were always welcome at whatever gathering we planned as the stories were unsurpassed. What a contribution to our community he has made as will his name continue to live on our minds and lips as we are reminded of such. With sincerest sympathies Julie

We know that you will always cherish your memories of John and his adventurous and productive life. We are both very grateful that we had a chance to get to know him in these past few years.
We will fondly drink a toast "To the Queen" in his memory. (Gin and tonic, light on the tonic!)
