I taught with Ed at LDSS in Listowel and also play the pipes. Our school choir was on their way to a European trip and Ed and I thought it appropriate to pipe them to their bus as they left the school. So that is what we did. Out from their meeting in the cafeteria, down the hall and out the door to the bus as other classes were in progress and wondering what all the commotion was about.

I had known Ed through the piping world, pretty much since I started learning in the late 60's, and thoroughly enjoyed listening to him perform in places such as Portree and Oban. But then I had the great good fortune to play alongside him in Peel Police ten years ago, during which time he wrote out some specific exercises to help me clear up some trouble spots. That was when I truly came to appreciate his grasp of piping. We had some fabulous times, including the Paul McCartney concert and the band trip to San Francisco / Pleasanton. Beth was relatively new to the piping community, and Ed always made her feel welcome wherever we met. We will miss him. Our thoughts and condolences go out to all his family and friends. Beth & Doug

To The Neigh Family: it is with great sadness that we read that your Dad has passed away. My husband Martin and I our proud graduates of Stratford Northwestern in 1977. Ed was our Gr. 10 English teacher. He was passionate and made high school English interesting. I can still hear him reading parts from Taming of the Shrew and i am not even a big fan of Shakespeare! Most importantly for me he was the Senior Girls Basketball coach for about three years and successfully coached us to a Huron Perth Championship. He was passionate about this type of coaching (without bagpipes) and taught us great skills and a love of the game. Some of us played University Basketball because of his mentoring. His enthusiasm was infectious. He lived in Wellesley while he was at Stratford NorthWestern and often gave Martin (now the principal of Nw) rides home after high school sports to Topping. They talked or Ed talked? about many things on those commutes! Martin and I both think of him very very fondly. We are sorry that we will be flying to BC on vacation on Friday because we would definitely be present to honour him at his memorial. Please accept our condolences and our heart felt admiration of your Dad. Some of our players, fondly referred to him as "Fast Eddy:" but for us he will always be Mr. Neigh. Great laugh, and a twinkle in those eyes! sincerely Kathryn and Martin Ritsma

Ed did a workshop with our little band back in the early '90's and taught my daughter at Gaelic College. He adjudicated our band many, many times at the NB Highland Games. Each time our paths crossed he was always positive, helpful and encouraging - no matter how bad we sounded! Last year he said to me, "I know where you are coming from", after I had read a particularly unhelpful sheet from another judge. He did know and did understand and was always supportive. We will miss him! Sincere condolences to your family from our family and from the Southern Victoria Pipe Band.

I was so deeply sorry to hear that Ed had passed. He was an incredibly special man, and I feel extremely honored to have known him and to have learned to much from him. I truly believe there is no death, that his consciousness will continue forever, and that he is pure, positive energy smiling at all of us. I'm sure he is sitting on the shoulders of his family members and friends, routing you on, and will never leave you. I wish you all peace. Thank you, Ed, for having been a very special part of my life.

Heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and students of this amazing, talented and sincere man. He inspired and will continue to inspire so many, including myself. Rather than resting in peace, I see him teaching angels to play the pipes--and I'm sure heaven sounds much sweeter now.

Being new to the piping world, I did not know Ed well but I still have some very fond memories. I remember the first year of the Ceol Mor workshop, watching as Ed sat and listened to the competition, his fingers silently playing along with all of the tunes. My best memory will be the Saturday Prof B piobaireachd competition at Maxville this year. We set up our lawn chairs near the judging area and whenever there were gaps between competitors, Ed described for us the tunes and the various ways of playing them. It was obvious how much he was enjoying the morning and it was the highlight of the games for me. His love of the music and teaching shone through. I send my heartfelt sympathy to your family.
