My condolences to the Wong family. I was very sad to hear of Jim's passing. I was a student in his epistemology class in 2011 which I remember to be one of the most intellectually challenging courses I have ever taken in university. I also have fond memories of talking to him outside of class about what I would do in the future such as applying for a masters program in philosophy or law school. He was very encouraging and supportive. He will be greatly missed.

I was very sad to hear of Jim's passing. We were students at U of T in the late 80s and 90s, and then colleagues for a short time at Ryerson. Jim was a unique individual who was always willing to share time and conversation. I always enjoyed talking to him- he was brilliant and had a lovely sense of humour! He cared about the people around him and dedicated himself to nurturing relationships. He was attentive and generous, and genuine in all that he did. I hadn't seen him in many years, but I mourn his passing. My condolences to his family and friends, and all those who were touched by his kind and gentle spirit.

I first met Jim at Hart House at U of T when he was a grad student and he trained at the Recreational Athletics facility in the late 70's. When I came to Laurier in 1998, he was good enough to have remembered me and reached out to welcome me. Jim was part of our running group, all of whom enjoyed mixing fitness with philosophical debates as to how to better the the university. Most of all however, Jim spoke of family. I will miss Jim. Sincere condolences to his family at his time. There is much to celebrate of Jim's life. He made a tremendous difference to those he touched.

My sincere condolences. I was a student of James for a number of years, taking four courses with him before he became my supervisor for my master's degree. My time in those courses as well as private conversations with him had a profound impact on my thinking, and it is likely that were it not for him I would not have continued in philosophy. He helped me get into my master's and my PhD degree and we co-wrote a paper for my first conference. I would not be where I am today without his support. He will be missed. Sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. James was a truly wonderful person whom I feel fortunate to have known. I first met him at U of T in the late eighties and continued to see him at philosophy events in the area over the years since then. My deepest condolences to the loved ones that James leaves behind. He is gone too soon. With sympathy.

As Susan (and perhaps Martin) knows, I was a long-time (for well over 10 years) regular running partner (and later, occasional walking partner) of Jim's (and one of only a few people at WLU who called him Jim, with his permission). Our conversations while running frequently included discussions of family, and I know how proud Jim was of his family and how much he loved them (immediate and extended family). Although we did not socialize much outside of running, Jim was a very good friend. I will miss his sense of humour and our discussions about family, work, and life in general. Condolences and best wishes to Jim's family.
Sincerely, Nick Coady.

I started at Laurier, in the department of history, at much the same time that Jim did. Although in different departments, our offices were then on the same floor; we were practically neighbours. Jim never passed my door [nor I his] without stopping a minute to say hello, exchange a few words about work--we shared a common research interest in the subject of childhood--our sons [who are the same age], Italian food [because my background is Italian and so is Susan's]. His smile was a gentle blessing, especially cherished in what was often not a gentle environment. He was revered as an inspiriting teacher by my son-in-law, who studied philosophy with him, and also shared his Asian heritage. We had much to talk about, and never more than a few minutes, in passing, to do it. I very much regret that, of course, and the fact that we rarely crossed paths once he started his administrative journey. As no doubt alongside many others, I will remember always what a fine human being he was, and will be ever saddened by his passing. My deepest condolences to Susan, Martin, and those others who will miss him profoundly.

Zia Sue and Cousin Martin, I am very sad in writing this, but not nearly as sad as you both must be. I am grateful to have met and known uncle Jim, and appreciative for the conversations we had. He was relaxed and sure but always optimistic. That being said, I'm sure you knew that he was passionate about his soccer. It was so funny to see a person who seemed so composed and relaxed to get "semi-hyper" when he spoke of soccer. I loved that about him. I imagine that this was how he lectured at school, with passion in the things he knew most about?? My entire family (myself, Erika, Joseph, Natalie and Callista) send our deepest condolences and love to you and Jim's entire extended family. We are sorry for your loss and hope that you can begin to feel his example and lessons in the life that he left you.
Peace be with you all.
