I know this is six months late...the news of Alex's passing has only just reached me, here in Australia. I met Alex in 1991 when I was travelling from Milan, Italy to Athens, Greece. We shared a train cabin from Milan to Brindisi, then both had outdoor passes for the ferry to Piraeus. We talked a lot on the train and got on well. Being a rather naive traveller, I was totally unequipped for the ferry trip and froze in the very cold conditions overnight out on the deck. I barely slept a wink all night. When he woke up at 6am, Alex let me sleep in his sleeping bag while he went off to have breakfast. I'll never forget how warm and cozy it felt and how kind it was of him to let me use it, instead of sleeping in. We stayed in touch after our trip though our correspondence was pretty light. In 2000 I was very surprised and honoured to receive an invitation to Alex and Cassandra's wedding in Mexico. I attended with a close friend of mine, Joi. The wedding and lovely reception, meeting Alex's bride and family, remain a highlight in my life. It was incredibly special and both Joi and I felt privileged to be a part of it. Over the years since the wedding we lost touch. I'm not on Facebook and only found out about Alex's illness through Joi. I was able to get back in touch with Alex briefly before he passed. He was an incredibly gentle soul who tread lightly on the earth and will always have a special place in my heart.
