I am here in Vancouver, deeply moved to hear of Theron's passing through my Mom (and the K-W Record)! Theron had a profound influence in my impressionable teenage years, when he was Director at Camp Edgewood in Rockwood (Guelph) in the early 1970s. Theron, (with others, such as Myles), introduced the cutting-edge idea of "small group camping" to replace the model of a pre-set daily camper program. Instead, co-ed groups of 8-10 same-age campers and 2 leaders collaborated to design their 1-2 week program and to develop the collaborative skills to address group process "ups and downs".
Fresh from his philosophy degree, he provoked us, as camp counselors and "Leaders-in-Training", to question and define our values and views. He was respectful and egalitarian with our young selves. He inspired us to see camp as practice for making a better world, built on the marriage of nature, dialogue and social cooperation, caring and the spiritual life.
These ideas have permeated the rest of my life, including founding a camp for low income children in K-W in my late teens ("Camp Uhuru"), based on these tenets, and throughout my 40-year career as an environmental consultant, public participation specialist and environmental educator.
Over the years, Mom has filled me in on Theron's immeasurable contribution to his community, and to social and environmental justice. What an inspiration!
I visited Theron and Joy several times as a young adult after camping days (and wrote after I moved to the coast) and always savoured the combination of intellectual stimulation and profound kindness - yes, the wide smile. Theron was a significant mentor in my life. Hearing this news, I'm grateful to have found him through the Internet a few years ago and exchanged two long letters, in which I related the impact of that camp experience, and heard firsthand about his rich life.
Joy, I remember you with great warmth, and offer sympathy and a sincere hope for a peaceful transition through this period of profound loss.

Theron was a friend of mine. With his warm heart, open mind and sharp intellect, he was an integrable part of the cultural and artistic fabric of Waterloo region and beyond. I first met Theron seventeen years ago when he was representing the Ontario Trillium Foundation and visited an artist-run initiative in Stratford and soon again at CAFKA, the Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area. The energy changed, when he entered any room with his warm smile and knowledgable character. His consistent approach was to help worthwhile initiatives and he followed through with remarkable, courageous actions of lasting positive impact. Often accompanied by Joy, we would meet again many times over the years at artistic and cultural events. He was an exemplary, most inspiring leader and a friend, close to my heart. We are fortunate to have known him. His presence in our lives and our community with the legacy of his achievements shall remain in our loving personal and collective memory.

The Candle is a sign to show you the way but knowing you would want us to see the light in keeping up your work, although it will be hard to fill your shoes. xxx

I had the pleasure of working with Theron on both the Community Research Ethics Board and the Research Ethics Board at Wilfrid Laurier University. I looked to Theron for insightful comments on whatever the Board was doing; you always knew where he stood on any issue, and that was very good. He was always glad to do whatever was asked and he served as a mentor to new members of the Boards. He inspired others to think about the ethical implications of collecting information from people in a way that protected privacy and yet enabled knowledge to expand. Theron was a wonderful person to work with.

Melanie & Joy, our prayers and thoughts are with you and your families.
Theron as a person and community enabler lived his values fully and we benefited from his life. He welcomed us to become 'activists' in the Race Relations committee that he founded. Later on, Theron engaged diversity in order to build an inclusive community, where we challenged each other and at the same time using the opportunity to learn from each other.
While we grieve, we can also celebrate a life lived by Theron to be inclusive while he pursued the vision of a diverse community.

I am so very sorry to hear that Theron has passed away. He was honestly one of my favorite guests and I always looked forward to our visits. I cut his hair for several years and always had the funniest, craziest, amazing conversations with him while he sat in my chair. I'm sure he walked away shaking his head on many occasions thinking I had finally lost my marbles after some of the topics I brought up LOL. I definitely saw his eyes rolling more then once during a few of my "rants" HaHaHa. I'm gonna miss his laugh and I'm gonna miss the way he was genuinely interested in whatever we talked about no matter how off the wall it was but most of all I'll miss his smile. I truly loved Theron like a friend and will miss him greatly.
No more pain my friend. Be at peace.
