Obituary of Greta Beryl Draper

Draper, Greta Beryl (Briard)

passed away on July 12, 2017 at Freeport Hospital, Kitchener, at the age of 97 years.

For 62 years she was the beloved wife of Douglas Draper who predeceased her on Oct. 17, 2011. Loving mother of Lorna Draper of Kitchener, Roy (Barbara) Draper of Elmira, and Ruth (Dennis) Funk of London, Ont. Dear sister of Earle Briard of Kingston, Ont.; grandmother to Douglas and Dan Draper, Jaimie and Kevin Funk and great-grandmother to Ryder. She was predeceased by her sisters Lois McLellan (2013) and Amy Briard-Smith (1992), brother-in-law Gerald McLellan (2002) and sister-in-law Edith Briard (2016).

The daughter of Willie and Maude Briard, Greta grew up on a farm near New Carlisle, Quebec, and then moved to Montreal for teacher training. After several years of teaching, she married Douglas Draper on Aug. 6, 1949. They lived in Verdun and then Pointe Claire, both suburbs of Montreal, before moving to Cambridge, Ont., in 1969. Greta taught Sunday school for 41 years, many of them at Westside Bible Chapel in Cambridge. A woman of deep faith, she memorized many scripture passages and taught Bible School and neighbourhood children’s evangelism. In their later years, Douglas and Greta moved to Waterloo and attended Bethel Bible Chapel. Greta loved nature in all its forms, especially birds and flowers. As well as gardening, she enjoyed camping in the tent trailer with its access to nature trails. Knitting was a pleasurable pastime and she could often be found with knitting needles in hand.

Friends may meet the family at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Sunday, July 16 from 2 - 4 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, July 17 at 11 a.m. A reception will immediately follow with subsequent interment in Mountview Cemetery, Cambridge.
