Doris Hilker

1934 - 2024

Doris Rose Hilker (Barnes) passed away peacefully on March 1, 2024 at the age of 89.

She leaves behind her soulmate and best friend Dennis Frederick Hilker and daughters Shellie (Doug Armstrong), Denise (Bob Deutschmann) and Laurie (Michael Messier) as well as seven grandchildren Becky (Drew), Dave, Jena (Andrew), Mitch (Hanh), Chad (Sarah), Toby (Suzie) and Ty and 6 great grandchildren Sienna, Ella, Jessica, Finn, Isla and Kai.

A lifelong resident of Kitchener-Waterloo, Doris worked as an elementary school teacher and also as a special needs teacher at New Dawn School.  Later she volunteered for Save the Children and Maycourt.

She had a full life surrounded by many cherished friends and family.  With them she enjoyed hiking, tennis, skiing, biking, playing bridge, travelling, gardening, music and especially summers spent on Tabasakwa Island and sailing on Georgian Bay.

She was a kind and giving person, the consummate "mom" and a constant presence in our lives, always there to share our joys and sorrows.

Doris and Dennis first met at the age of 13 and shared a rare and enviable bond.  They have celebrated 68 years of marriage.
