Bernard Adlys

Obituary of Bernard Adlys

Born July 4, 1940 in Toronto. Bernie passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on July 6, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved husband and business partner of Sonia (nee Skrypec) for 53 years. Cherished father of Kelly (Crystal), David (Fadia), Tina (Mark) Thomas, and Bernie (Colleen). Loved grandpa of Jessica, Amanda, Christian, Bijou, John, Megan, and Jacob. Brother of Eddie, Mary, Annie, and twin sister Brenda. Predeceased by his parents John Peter and Amelia (nee Sadkowski), sister Jeanette, and brother Walter. Bernie has always had an entrepreneurial mind. From the time he was 11 years old, he was shining shoes for 25cents on a corner in downtown Toronto. He would sell newspapers in the morning for 3cents, but most would give him 5 cents. He would box on Friday nights for $3.00 a loss or $7.00 a win, he was happy with either. In 1953, Bernie moved to Waterloo with his family. His father purchased the Kent Hotel (today known as the Huether Hotel). His father often remarked "Bernie can you imagine all those nickels" a 7oz glass of beer for 5cents. Well since then, Bernie hasn't stopped counting nickels. Bernie has always had a love for the business. He would constantly make changes to the hotel to keep people's interest. Bernie had a great love for life and his family. He had the biggest heart, was very generous, fun-loving and always cracked a joke. He loved all sports and was a proud Canadian. Bernie cherished many things in his life: the love of his beautiful wife Sonia, his four children and seven grandchildren. His heaven on earth was his Florida shack on the beach where he enjoyed the sun on his face, the warm breeze and the long walks with Sonia. He also loved his little cabin on the lake where the fish were always biting and the stillness of the night allows him to sleep. A private family service, and burial at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo, has taken place. A heartfelt thank you to Rev. Murray McDermott for his care and compassion, and to Waterloo Regional Police Constables Boyd and Cooper for their thoughtful escort. Condolences for the family and donations to Child Witness Centre or Carmel of St. Joseph may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo at www.erbgood.com or 519.745.8445.
