Agnes Wells

Obituary of Agnes Wells

Born, December 12, 1909, in Washington D.C., died in Toronto, January 20, 2013; Agnes enjoyed a long and active life of volunteering in the arts, hospitals and her church - and extensive travel. After her father's death, in 1918, she lived in Windsor; after her marriage to Theophilus Wells, in 1930, she lived in Detroit. They moved back to Theo's hometown, Waterloo, in 1935. Agnes moved to Terrace on the Square Retirement Home, Waterloo, in 2003, then, when her health failed, in 2007, to Houses of Providence, a nursing home, in Toronto. She formed the Marathon Bridge group, of the Church of the Holy Saviour and participated in it for over 40 years. She was active for many years with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra and, as Women's Committee Chair, was influential in the orchestra becoming fully professional. She made costumes for The Little Theatre and volunteered with The Art Gallery. She worked part-time in the library of the, then new, University of Waterloo and later with the Kitchener Public Library. After her husband's death in 1974, she took refresher courses in languages and used this skill in her frequent travels, giving slide shows at the Seniors' Centre on her return. Agnes will be missed by her son, Walter Wells, of Toronto, daughter Eleanor Michaelis, of Carefree Arizona, and daughter Cathrine Conings, of Burnaby BC, plus six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Holy Saviour, 33 Allen St. E., Waterloo on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 11 a.m. Rather than flowers, donations to the Church of the Holy Saviour, or to the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, would be appreciated. Donations may be arranged by contacting the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, Ontario, www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
