Miss Sherk (she will always be Miss Sherk to us)was teaching at Waterloo Oxford when my wife and I arrived. Fresh country kids coming to the big school. She taught us English Literature, and as she taught from the classics she wove in the good morals, principles and values that are timeless and life lessons for all. Her demeanor was always calm and warm punctuated by a kindly smile or small laugh. Her teaching ministry molded lives.
It was not until we were adults did we realize the scope of her whole life. Her open heart and open home and the many people that passed through the door that were showered by the love of Christ in her. Her depth of committment to Him was unreserved and a wonderful example to us all. It was Him who gave the strength to carry on these many years, blessing those she encountered. He was faithful to the end as was Miss Sherk. She will be missed by many including us Len and Joan Habermehl

I became a Christian in 1974. It was a time in Kitchener whan a lot of youth were being saved. A lot of us were from non-Christian backgrounds and had been into drugs ect. Dorothy was going to Hazelglen Alliance at the time and that was the first church I had ever attended.I think back then I was a little unsavory to say the least but when I think of the love and example that was shown me by Dorothy,Kathleen, and Reah it brings tears to my eyes. They knew how to love the unlovable and and the grace they extended to me and others will never be forgotten. I have used there names many times when telling others about my story. She ran the race well and now will receive the victors crown. Even though we have not seen each other for a long time I will miss her.

I had the greatest privilege of living with Dorothy (and Mavis, Rhea, and Kathleen) during my undergraduate years at the University of Waterloo many years ago now. Dorothy was such an inspiration to me in terms of her profound and intelligent faith, acceptance of the complexities of life, love of music, explorative nature, and always her joyful and loving spirit. Oh, how I will miss that wonderful laugh of hers. Dorothy always made time to listen to those grappling with decisions and gave wise counsel when asked for her opinion. I always appreciated her wise words to me as well as the English literature reading lists she gave me as I departed on each co-op work term :-D. After I left "home" (174 Vermont St.), Dorothy became "Auntie Dorothy" to my children and we always relished our visits during the summer and at Christmas. Our conversations only became richer and deeper as the years went by. Her impact on my life was immeasurable and I thank God for the deep honour of having been in her life. This is the passing of a dear, faithful saint and a very great lady. My deepest condolences to Kathleen, Coral, Bubby and Stan, all Dorothy's nieces and nephews, and to dear Mavis who lived with Dorothy for so many years and was her very faithful friend.

Miss Sherk was my English teacher at Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School and I was her first "client" when she was assigned the additional role as guidance counsellor. She helped me pick my university and specialty, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. I do believe that we were both guided to an answer to our prayers. In retirement, she told me that she had done something she later learned no guidance counsellor ought to do, and she had been anxious about the advice she gave me. She was so relieved to know that I was so content, indeed, delighted, with the choice. She is the teacher who had the greatest positive impact on my life.
