Obituary of Veronica Dyck

A loving and wonderful great-grandmother, aunt, mother-in-law, grandmother, mother, and woman of great strength, Veronica Dyck will be greatly missed by family and friends. Survived by sons Alfred, Arnold and wife Vy, granddaughters Emily and Caitlin, grandson Joseph and wife Ana, great-grandsons Alexander and Sebastian. Aunt to Pam, Vicki, Fred, Loretta, Phil, Edward, Marion, Ron, Gladys, William and families. Special friend for over 86 years to Marta Schafer and cousin Helen Hazen. Veronica was predeceased by her parents Wilhelm and Helene Sudermann, brothers Alfred, twins William and Jacob, and nephew Bill. Married to beloved husband Leopold Dyck in 1941, she was sadly widowed from the love of her life in 1967 at the age of 53. She returned to the workforce and was at Dominion life until she retired at age 65. She lived in Kitchener and Waterloo for over 80 years, raising her sons, gardening, sewing, painting and bird-watching. She had a great love of animals, donated money to a number of animal shelters, and was always concerned for the well-being of others. She was a talented artist from an early age and a wonderfully spirited woman who loved her family unconditionally. Veronica also loved children and was always a big part of her grandchildren's lives as they were growing up. They even lived with her for periods of their lives as students and young adults. Veronica's early years could only be described as tumultuous, Born in Halbstadt, Russia, she emigrated to Canada with her family in 1924 as the eldest (and only girl) of four surviving children. After escaping revolutionary Russia and being separated from her mother for a year when she was 6 years old, she arrived in Canada with her family just in time for the Great Depression. She later supported the family after her father died when she was only 23. Veronica died peacefully in her 100th year, at Columbia Forest LTC surrounded by her family. The family would like to thank the wonderful and loving staff of Columbia Forest who nurtured, hugged, and joked with her, and made her last 3 years happy and comfortable. Your dedication and care meant so much to her and us. Friends and family are invited to share their memories of Veronica during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo on Monday, June 17th from 1:00-2:30, followed by a short service at 2:30.
