Hugh Miller

Obituary of Hugh Miller

Hugh Miller died suddenly Monday evening at home. Too soon. He will be sorely missed by his wife Judith, by his sons Ian and Bruce and by his delightful acquired daughters Liisa and Becky. Hugh's was a wide-reaching family, including his sister Carolyn and partner Jacques Gumbau of Cannes, France; his "youngest brother" Hugh Maclean and Margaret Notar; his "youngest sister" Heather Clark and Roy Clark; his "other brother" James Maclean (deceased) and Thelma Maclean; his many nieces and nephews: Neil and Amber Maclean, Joanne and Dan Holliday, Sean Gumbau (deceased), Manuel and Simona Gumbau, Jennifer and Scott Thomas, Robert Clark, Adam Notar Maclean, Graham Notar Maclean and their ever-widening families. He kept in touch with his Uncle Bill and Aunt Barbara of Campobello Island, their five sons and their families, as well as adopting Judith's Aunt Isobel Day and her cousins Elizabeth and Jennifer. He is predeceased by both his parents, George and Pauline Miller of St. Andrews, N.B. He took great joy in the bright personalities and saucy tongues of his five grandchildren: Ella, Devyn, McKayla, Spencer and Leah. All of us learned from Hugh how to live with generosity and compassion. Hugh's friends and family may visit at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Friday, August 9, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. A memorial service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 1:30 p.m., followed by a reception at the funeral home. Interment will be from the church of Hugh's ancestors in St. Andrews, NB, close to his beloved Bay of Fundy, on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Heartfelt thanks to Region of Waterloo Emergency Medical Services, Waterloo Fire Department, Waterloo Regional Police Service, as well as Dr. Inderpal Singh Saluja and the Emergency Room staff at Grand River Hospital. Hugh's many contributions to this community and beyond have included the creation of Renison University College's Social Development Studies program, and executive roles in Waterloo Minor Soccer Club, Kitchener-Waterloo NDP; and Youth in Conflict with the Law. Donations to any of the above would be appreciated by the family and can be arranged by contacting the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
