Obituary of Sister Marie Horne

Born on August 9, 1936, in Enfield,Nova Scotia to William Ernest and Teresa Ann (nee MacDonnell) Horne, Marie grew up in a large family in Enfield, and attended E.H. Horne School. She joined the Religious of the Sacred Heart in Montreal on September 1, 1954, at the age of 18, pronounced her first vows on March 4, 1957 and her final vows on September 29, 1962. For more than twenty-five years Sister Horne served the community in Montreal, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Halifax. During that time she earned a BA in Fine Arts from McGill University, taught, and also served in pastoral animation. In 1981 she obtained permission to transfer to the Carmel of St. Joseph in St. Agatha, Ontario. As Sister Mary Agnes of the Trinity she dedicated herself to a life of hidden prayer and sacrifice, putting her many talents at the service of the community. In her later years, when multiple sclerosis made an electric wheelchair her only means of getting around, Sister continued peacefully to follow her Carmelite vocation. Sister Agnes died after a short illness at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, Ontario, on September 28, 2013. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her Carmelite community. She is predeceased by her parents, her brothers Bennett,Anthony, Hubert, Daniel and Patrick, and her sisters Dorothy Finley, Rose and Marjorie Sister Agnes is survived by her sister Veronica (Dennis) Connelly (Windsor, NS) and brother Edmund (Enfield, NS), as well as by many nephews and nieces and grandnephews and grand nieces. Visitation will be at the Carmelite Monastery, 1127 Carmel-Koch Rd., St. Agatha, Ontario, on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. A Vigil Service will take place at 7:30 p.m. The funeral Mass for Sister Agnes will be celebrated by Most Reverend Douglas Crosby, O.M.I., Bishop of Hamilton, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2013, followed by internment in the Sisters' cemetery.
