In 1950 KCI opened the new wing, arriving was a new history & French teacher, John Kerr and a grade ten student Harold Russell. It never was my privilege to have John as a teacher but by the end of the decade I had followed in his footsteps as a teacher; over the years I had many contacts with John & Elizabeth and I considered myself fortunate to count him as a friend with many similar interests. Recently we met as members of a postcard club. This wonderful gentleman will be missed so very much.

I was saddened to hear of John's passing this morning. He was my first boss when I worked in the school library back in high school. He nurtured my musical interests, especially G&S and became a friend as well as a boss. Peter was a classmate of mine and later a student of my wife in university so we continued to have a connection to the family long after I left high school. Perhaps the greatest tribute to John's influence on me is my choice of first career: I went to library school and worked as a librarian for most of the nineties. May God's grace and peace be with the Kerr family in this time of grief.

Mr. Kerr was an unforgettable teacher and mentor and profoundly well read. Even in his later years, he was still happy to teach and eager to yet learn. I have looked up to him with respect and inspiration. The teaching of history in Kitchener will not see his like again. He has been a most "bold contributory."
