Herman and Berta Vogel died in their home in the early hours of Monday, October 26th. The son of Friedrich Vogel and Olga nee Auch, Herman Johann Vogel was born in Anatolin, Poland on March 26th, 1916. Berta, daughter of Friedrich Wagner and Emma nee Vogel was born on July 28th, 1920 in nearby Leonberg. Both a part of the same close Lutheran German community, they were promised to each other before the Second World War. Despite their many indescribable tribulations, they found each other again and married in Hohenhamel, Germany on September 16th, 1948. Herman completed an engineering degree in Kueckelheim, where he was engaged in restoring the ravaged town. A daughter was born in 1949, Waltraud Inge (husband Leif Laakso). Berta feared encroachment of the Russians in those chaotic times, prompting immigration to Canada, where they had been preceded by family members. Klaus (wife Barbara nee Martin) was born in 1952, Heinz (wife Barbara nee Vollmer) in 1954 and Monika (husband Jim Helm) in 1958. Herman was the surviving sibling of a family of eleven. Berta is survived by her brother, Erwin Wagner (wife Ruth nee Zwick) of Neugnadenfeld, Germany and her sister, Friedl Siegmund of Okanagan Valley, British Columbia. The couple is survived by all of their children, spouses and ten grandchildren: Alisha, Aric and Kelby Vogel, Katarina, Kristina, Nikolas and Daniel Vogel and Ryan, Stefanie and Michael Helm. Their love of God and family has permeated every aspect of their lives and the lives of their children and grandchildren. They sang hymns up to the last day, in anticipation of the day of reunion with their Savior. Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, today (Thursday) from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will take place at Messiah Lutheran Church, 700 Glen Forrest Blvd., Waterloo, on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 2 p.m., the Rev. Kevin Walrath officiating. Interment in Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener. Reception in the church hall.
