Obituary of Aileen Hiller

Aileen Hiller
We are saddened by the passing of Loretta Aileen Vera Hiller (Mick) on Saturday, October 17, 2009, a devoted wife of the late Arthur Edgar (Art) Hiller for 49 years. More important to Aileen than any of her professional accomplishments and volunteerism was her unwavering love and support of family. She is survived by her children Marilyn and Tom (Audrey); grandchildren Darcy Bell (Shannon), Dawn Rogerson (Kevin) and Deena Shennan (Shane), and great-grandchildren Kara Shennan, Karmen Shennan, Sean Bell, Leelyn Bell, Brooke Bell, Tanika Rogerson and Vanessa Rogerson all of Edmonton, Alberta; grandchildren Callum Hiller and Rob Fleming; and great grandchildren Hayley, Alexis, and Emily all of Houston. Aileen was the first child of Harry T. Mick and Vera McIntyre, born in North Cobalt, Ontario on December 9, 1915, she remained true to her northern roots for her entire life. After graduating from Drayton High School she spent a year with her Aunt and Uncle, Audrey and Gilbert Hunt, in Ottawa, Ontario, where she graduated with a business certificate with Honours. Her real career began, however, when she moved to Kitchener in 1937 to train as a nurse at what was then KW Hospital. It was while she was a fledgling nurse at KW Hospital that she met her husband to be, Arthur (Art) Hiller. Aileen and Art’s door was always open to the fellowship that they fostered amongst their family and friends. Aileen remained a keen bird watcher right to the end of her life. She was a life birder who participated in the repatriation of the Peregrin Falcon to the KW area. As well she was an avid reader of history and geography and took a lively interest in world events and current affairs. Aileen was a lifelong quilter with the Mount Zion Lutheran Church Quilting Guild as well as serving as president of the Women’s Auxiluary of Waterloo Lutheran Seminary. Aileen and Art’s house was open to guests of their children. These were people visiting from local areas and groups from other countries were equally welcome at 16 Roslin Avenue, Aileen and Art’s original house in Waterloo. Some of Mom Hiller’s other activities include acting as nurse at Camp Edgewood in Eden Mills as well as acting on the altar guild at Mount Zion and participating in the Open Sesame Program. Aileen and others at Mount Zion started the original Christmon Christmas Tree at Mount Zion. Mom was a person who believed that there was nothing you could not do if you put your mind and heart to it, and she always presented a glad face and happy demeanour to all she met. A celebration of her life and legacy will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 11 am at Mount Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 29 Westmount Rd S., Waterloo. A reception will follow. Condolences for the family and in lieu of flowers, donations to Grand River Hospital Building Fund may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo www.erbgood.com or 519.745.8445. Special thanks to Doctors Tom Borys and Peter Stevenson and all who touched Mom with their compassionate care at Trinity Village Studios and Care Centre.
