Obituary of Gibbs Charles William Gibbs

(Bill) Charles William Gibbs
Bill Gibbs passed away at Pinehaven Nursing Home, Waterloo, on Friday, October 17, 2008. Bill’s sterling character and devotion to his family will be a cherished memory to Olive (Atkins) Gibbs, his loving wife of 62 years, son Brent (Despina Georgas) Gibbs of Toronto, and daughter Donna (Stephen) Carpenter of Conestogo. “Boppa” was very proud of grandchildren Caitlin and Griffin Carpenter (Conestogo) and William Georgas (Toronto). Although Bill has family roots in Waterloo and in the Channel Islands, he was a Torontonian at heart and loved the city’s civic life. He was a charter member of the North York Kiwanis Club, and served in all executive capacities. He was a founding executive of the Amesbury Sports Club (North York) in the 1960s, which provided baseball and hockey facilities for youth. Bill started his distinguished career in banking with the Bank of Toronto (later Toronto-Dominion) in 1937, and rose to a senior position in commercial credit by retirement in the early 1980s. Bill was devoted to his country, and served with courage in the Royal Navy (later the Royal Canadian Navy) from 1939 to 1945. Most of all, Bill was a family man. He will be remembered for his sense of humour, incisive thinking, and an ability to “get things done.” Bill Gibbs taught by example how to live a good life with confidence, energy, personal discipline, and the highest sense of principle. Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Sunday, October 19, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A private family service will be held with interment at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Salvation Army (www.SalvationArmy.ca) or by contacting the funeral home at 519-745-8445 or www.erbgood.com
