Obituary of Norman Stromberg

Norman Stromberg
NORMAN ERIC STROMBERG 1923 – 2009 Norman passed away at Freeport Health Centre of Grand River Hospital on Friday, November 20, 2009, at the age of 86 years. Survived by his loving wife Ruth, daughter Linda Stromberg, daughter Brenda Stromberg and grandson Ethan Stromberg Gerth. Predeceased by his parents Nathan Eric Stromberg and Ragna Tweter-Stromberg and son Curtis Eric Stromberg. Norman was born in Edmonton, Alberta and raised in the town of New Norway, Alberta. He and his younger brother Bennie helped their parents maintain the homestead through the Great Depression years. During these years, his parents engaged the two boys in music, sports and hobbies such as photography and model airplanes. After leaving the farm, he furthered his education studying electrical engineering which developed into a two year career in Vancouver with CP Airlines. Two weeks after his move to Vancouver, he met Ruth Simonson. It was love at first sight and two years later they began their marriage of 58 years. Early in the marriage he received an invitation to teach at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Art, an extension of the University of Alberta. The couple moved to Calgary and he began his teaching career of 15 years. Three children arrived and he would moonlight selling life and health insurance in the evenings. He was quite successful and consequently was asked to manage a Canadian Head Office. He accepted and the family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. A merger of two American companies occurred and the family moved once again. This time it was to Kitchener-Waterloo for a two year contract with the option of moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota upon completion. The family chose to stay in the area. He then went into business for himself and 15 years of selling real estate. Throughout his life, Norman's passion for people was reflected in his actions. He always made us laugh. He was an advocate for the down trodden which connected to the deep religious conviction he held. He was cherished and will be deeply missed. The family wishes to extend their appreciation and thanks to all of the doctors and nurses helping him throughout these years, and especially the last four months. Friends are invited to share their memories of Norman with his family during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo, on Friday, November 27, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate Norman’s life will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow the service in the Fireside Reception Room of the funeral home.
