Obituary of John Cowan

<h1>John "Arthur" Cowan</h1> 1921 - 2010 Passed away peacefully on May 18th at the age of 88. Survived by his devoted wife Flora Cross and his children, Bill, Matthew (Inga), Patricia (Garth) of Calgary and Robin (Rifka) in Holland. Grandchildren, Jemima, Marlow, Raffles, Felix, Peter, Eric, Andrea, Samantha, Alex and Tullia will remember the canoe rides, 6 Mile Lake spaghetti and trips to Deer Creek. Also missed by Flora’s children Pam, Lynn, Jill, Lesley, Stuart, and Peter. Arthur grew up in Winnipeg, and after serving in WW2 in the Navy, received a PhD from the University of Toronto. Following a short stint with the Defence Research Board in Ottawa, he founded the physics department at the University of Waterloo where he continued to teach from 1957 until 1989. He was also very active in the KW Figure Skating Club for many years as a judge and a fundraiser. He was an accomplished ice dancer, tennis player and skier until he was into his 80’s. Friends are invited to join the family at the Erb and good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. South, Waterloo for visitation on Tuesday, May 25, from 7-9 pm. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 26 at 3 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel, with a reception to follow. The family is very grateful to the staff at the Westmount Nursing Home for their compassionate care in the past year.
