Obituary of Claude Goyder

Claude Goyder
1912 – 2007 On Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital, three weeks prior to his 95th birthday, Claude died unexpectedly of a heart attack, while out for a walk on one of the coldest days of the year. The world has lost one of its dearest, kindest, most generous souls. A true gentleman, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and staunch friend to many people, Claude was born in England, but spent his early childhood in New York City. At the conclusion of World War I, his family returned to England. He was educated at Mill Hill School and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. During the 1930’s, he spent several years in Canada with Canadian International Paper, learning the newsprint trade. During World War II, back in England, he served in the Admiralty. Postwar, having developed a liking for North American life, he, his wife Eleanor and their two boys emigrated to Canada in 1954, settling in Hudson, Quebec. Shortly after retirement, they moved to Waterloo to be closer to family. They enjoyed an active retirement, gardening, concert-going, socializing with a wide circle of friends and exploring the countryside. A man of eclectic interests, widely read, Claude loved classical music, sailing and model railways. Predeceased by his wife Eleanor in December 2003, he is survived by his sons David Goyder (Janie) of Southampton, England and John Goyder (Jo-Anne) of Oakville. He leaves four grandchildren, Russell Goyder (Vanessa), Jennifer Goyder, Christopher Goyder (Rachel) and Matthew Goyder (Leighanne) and one great-grandson, Joseph Goyder. He also leaves four step-grandchildren, Jennifer Wood (Dylan), Toby Shanks, Christian Shanks and Matthew McDowell and two step-great-grandchildren, Kai and Malia Wood.
