Jim Speers
1928 – 2007 Jim was born on July 4, 1928 and died of a broken heart on Wednesday, March 28, 2007. Survived by his sisters Elsie Speers, Barbara Hall and Kathleen Barker, brother-in-law Alvan Hall, niece Mary Sauer and her husband Lee, nephew Douglas Barker, and many great-nieces and nephew. Predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Nellie Speers and his brother-in-law Arnold Barker. Jim was employed at Uniroyal from the age of 17 years until his retirement. He remained a bachelor all of his life in order to devote his time and energy to the care and support of his mother until her death and of his sisters, Elsie, who currently resides at Forest Heights Long-Term Care Centre. In January of 2006, Jim was unable to care for himself independently and joined Elsie at Forest Heights Long-Term Care Centre where his terrific sense of humour and his willingness to give a helping hand where needed were always appreciated by the staff and residents alike. Jim was an avid woodworker, baker and gardener and his family were the beneficiaries of his many talents and generosity. During the past year, Jim developed a special relationship with Helen, a fellow resident at Forest Heights. Upon Helen’s death in December 2006, Jim’s zest for life slipped away as his health deteriorated and he continued to miss this special friend. His family mourns the loss of such a fine and giving person. A private memorial service will be held by Jim’s family with interment to follow at Woodland Cemetery. The family wishes to thank all those who supported Jim during his stay at Forest Heights Long-Term Care Centre.
