Susan Harkins

Obituary of Susan Harkins

Susan Harkins
1937 – 2007 A beautiful woman died the other day, Friday, March 16, 2007, suddenly, unexpectedly, and leaving a very considerable hole in the lives of many people. She was born Susan Steingass in Cleveland, Ohio, and lived a life of giving to others. She was kind enough to marry Jim Harkins in 1961 and was patient enough to stay married to him for the next forty-six years. She produced three children, Marc, Holly, and Mike, and shepherded them into their adulthood. She then turned to five energetic grandsons but, to what would have been her greatest disappointment, had to abandon that task all too quickly. Owen, Silas, Duncan, Malcolm and Finnegan will never forget their Momo. Nor, indeed, will the rest of us, Jim, Marc (Nicole), Holly (Richard), or Mike. And beyond this lot, there are her siblings Frank (Donna), Laura, and Mary Alice(Craig) and a host of nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews scattered throughout the United States, from coast to coast and border to border. Then there are her friends who over the past three and a half decades have served with her on a great number of boards and committees in the volunteer sectors of the social service and informational work in the Waterloo Region. We have, all of us, suffered a grievous loss, and all of us will mourn her in our own separate ways. We can do this together, at a visitation, at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on the evening of Wednesday, March 21, 2007 from 7-9 pm. A gathering to celebrate Susan’s life will be held at the Erb & Good Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, March 22, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Susan would have preferred any donations you would care to make, in her name, be given to the United Way of Kitchener-Waterloo. These may be arranged through the funeral home, 519-745-8445 or www.erbgood.com In living memory of Susan, a tree will be planted through the Trees for Learning Program by the funeral home.
