Passed away peacefully, with family by his side, at K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital on March 14, 2009 at the age of 77 years.
Udo came to Canada one day before his 21st birthday. He worked his way up from a young immigrant washing cars, driving truck, department store sales and management. In 1966 he became the first General Manager of Grand River Cable (now Rogers) after earning his business degree. Later he obtained his MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University and in 1978 he bought and became the publisher of Cable Communications Magazine until his retirement in 1994. He was an active member of the Concordia Club for 40 years, a member of the K-W Retired Business Mens Club, a member of the Canadian Cable Television Pioneers Association and served on the C.C.T.A. Board for many years. Udo enjoyed tennis, hockey and football.
Udo is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Elisabeth, his daughters, Doris (George) Harper, Linda Salewsky, Angela Salewsky (Patrick Trusz), grandchildren, Tania Harper (Alan Willemsen), Tiffany (Ron) van Someren, Andrew McCaughtrie and fiancée (LeeAnne Fairbairn), and Justin McCaughtrie, and three great-grandchildren Daniel, Heather, Ben and his fourth expected in May. Also survived by his sister Brigitte Wensing, nephew Marco (Simone) Beerman and their children all of Germany, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Herta and Augustine Okonkwo and their children and nephew Michael Schumacher.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Udo with his family during a visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo, on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A celebration of Udos life will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Wednesday, March 18 at 11:00 am. Cremation will have taken place.
