Rev. Sydney Hershey

1921 2007
The Reverend Sydney J. Hershey of Waterloo and Sauble Beach
Suddenly but peacefully, at his sons home in Cambridge, on June 28, Syd died in his 87th year.
Husband of Ruth Eleanor (Rush) Hershey. Dear father of Stephen (Dee), the twins Brian and Beverly and Grandfather to Brett, Timothy, Morgan, Kaitlyn and Samantha and Great-Grandfather to Michele, Jade and Curtis.
Syd was born in Niagara Falls and leaves one sister Claire Elder of Campbell River, B.C. and many nieces and nephews. Syd served six years in the R.C.A.F. in the Second World War, followed by a number of years in sales in the KW area. Out of his deep faith, he felt called to become a candidate for ministry the first from First United Church, Waterloo - a decision made at Five Oaks. His family supported this decision and awaited his ordination in 1964. Syds ministry continued as a student at Christ the King and Bloomingdale United Churches. After ordination the family moved to Oakville (Munns
United Church and a new church development, Trinity United). Other churches served included Burkholder, Hamilton and Trinity, Thorold until his retirement in 1986. Over the years, Syd was very active in Presbytery and Conference, even in retirement. He proudly completed his BA at WLU in 1991. Syd and Ruth square danced, traveled and cruised extensively while maintaining their cottages at Sauble. It was a joy to have North Sauble Community Church overflowing for their 50th and 60th Anniversaries. It is with regret the 65th wedding anniversary will not happen on Labour Day weekend 2007.
Two memorial services will take place, Tuesday July 3, 2007, 1 p.m., at Christ the King United Church, 167 Thaler Ave., Kitchener and Saturday July 7, 2007, 1 p.m., at North Sauble Community Church.
