Obituary of Welf Heick

Welf Heick

1930-2010
Welf Henry Heick died just shy of his 80th year, after a long struggle with Huntington Disease. Welf was born to Otto and Charlotte Heick in Lincoln Nebraska along with an older sister Mary (deceased) and younger brother Hans. Early teen years were spent in Ellis Kansas until the family moved to Waterloo in September 1947.
In 1955, Welf married Margaret Schlote and was blessed with four girls: Kathy, Lisa, Heather and Jennifer. Later, he was also blessed with three grandchildren: Jim Christy and Carolyn. He earned his BA from Western (1955) and MA at Queens (1960). In the early days he taught high school in Listowel. A few years later (1966) he earned his PhD from Duke University and returned to Canada to teach at WLU. He was chairman of the History Department for a period of time. He also held the honour of being Convocation Marshal for 25 years and Chairman of the Convocation Committee. During his career he wrote several publications including his last book, Propensity to Protect, which gave him the opportunity to be interviewed on such news shows as Canada AM. He retired in 1993 but remained Professor Emeritus.
Welf enjoyed reading, watching basketball (especially if Duke was playing) and finding new ways to recycle (way ahead of his time!!). He was a devoted member of St Johns Lutheran Church and Mount Zion Lutheran Church. He was most proud of his family.
Welf will be missed dearly by many. Those that wish to do so can make a remembrance donation to the Huntington Society of Canada which may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home 171 King St. S., Waterloo, Ontario.
There will be no visitation but there will be a memorial service to be held at Mount Zion Lutheran Church on Westmount Road in Waterloo on Tuesday June 29th beginning at 11:00 am. Welfs family will welcome family and friends before the service beginning at 10:15 am. A luncheon at the church will follow.
