Jim died suddenly, as the result of a heart attack at his cottage in Orillia, on Saturday, July 26, 2008.
He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Jackson) and dear father of David Berner and his wife Jo-Hellen of Orillia and Daniel Berner and his wife Gina Walker of Ottawa. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his two grandchildren, Christopher and Kaitlin Berner and brother Howard Berner and his wife Betty of Waterloo. He was predeceased by his parents, Alberta (Scharmann) and Emmanuel Berner; brothers George Keil, Harold and Carl Berner and sister Dorothy Bast.
Jim was a well respected and active member of the Kitchener Waterloo business and volunteer community. A chartered accountant by profession, Jim retired as a senior partner with Collins Barrow. He was an active member of St. John The Evangelist Anglican Church in Kitchener where he was a former Warden and Treasurer. He was a dedicated volunteer with Track 3 Skiing Program at Chicopee, a past member of the Rotary Club or Kitchener Grand River; a former board member of Family and Childrens Services of Waterloo Region, K-W Counselling Centre, United Way of Kitchener Waterloo and area and a current member of A. R. Kaufman Family YMCA and volunteer with their Strong Kids Initiative.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Jim with his family at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A service to celebrate Jims life and faith will be held at St. John The Evangelist Anglican Church, 23 Water Street North, Kitchener, on Friday, August 1, 2008 at 11 am, with Jims niece, Rev. Joanne Peppler officiating. Cremation has taken place.
Condolences for the family or donations to the A. R. Kaufman Family YMCA Strong Kids Initiative would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy and may be arranged through the funeral home.
In living memory of Jim, a donation to the Trees for Learning Program will be made by the funeral home.
