<h1>George Holbrook</h1> O.C., PhD., P.Eng. 16 December 1917 – 15 July 2008 George William Holbrook was born in Asquith, Saskatchewan 16 December 1917. He leaves his beloved wife of 64 years, Frances Mary Fletcher and three children, Adam (and his wife, Mariana), Jane (and her husband, Dr. Ralph Smith), and Peter George (who died in 1973). He has five grandchildren, Miranda (Clarke), Rose, Colburn, and Duncan and Kate Holbrook-Smith. He was educated in Saskatchewan and England and received degrees in engineering from the University of London and Queen’s University, Kingston. He also received an honorary degree from the Royal Military College, Kingston. He served in the Royal Signals and the Royal Canadian Signals, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was Head of the Dept. of Electrical Engineering at the Royal Military College, Kingston and later President of the Nova Scotia Technical College, Halifax. He retired as Director-General of the Communications Research Centre, Ottawa. He was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 2004. In retirement he lived in Tantallon, N.S., Halifax, and Waterloo, Ont. He died 15 July 2008 in Waterloo, Ontario of complications resulting from a stroke.
