Retired from the Faculty of the School of Optometry, University of Waterloo, Dr. Long passed away at Lisaard House in Cambridge on Saturday, January 6, 2007.
Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1921, Dr. Long received his primary and secondary schooling there. He graduated from the College of Optometry in Toronto in 1943 and from 1943 to 1945 served as an optometrist in the R.C.A.F. Upon his discharge, he enrolled at the University of Toronto receiving a B.A. degree in 1948. In the same year, he joined the Faculty of the College of Optometry, remaining there as professor until 1967.
In 1967, he was appointed to the faculty of the newly formed School of Optometry at the University of Waterloo where he served as Professor and had terms as Senator, Admissions Officer, Undergraduate Affairs Officer and Director of the school. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1984.
Predeceased by a brother Morton Long, he is survived by Eleanor and Vaughn Taylor (Waterloo), niece Kathryn Long and two nephews Ian Long and Mark Long, all of Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Cremation has taken place. According to Dr. Longs wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
