Obituary of Robert Broad

Robert "Bud" Broad
1911 – 2009 Bob, or Bud, as he was known to family and many close friends, passed away peacefully, in his 98th year at K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital, on Thursday, January 22, 2009. He was the beloved husband of Mildred for 70 years and the loving father of Bob. He is survived by and will be sadly missed by Mildred, Bob and his wife Sue, grandchildren Michael Broad and Lisa Nimer, and her husband Bernie, great-grandchildren Noah and Adam Nimer, and nephews Glenn Broad and Gerrald Case, as well as other family and many friends. Bud was predeceased by his parents, Della and Leslie Broad, and his brother Roy. Bud was a proud graduate of the University of Toronto Chemical Engineering Class of 3T5, continuing to regularly associate with his classmates until he was one of the last remaining. He used his engineering skills to solve many energy and combustion problems for the industrial customers of the Rochester and Pittsburg Coal Company over the 39 plus years in his executive capacity there. He also used these skills to become the first person in Canada to repair light meters and other complex components of cameras for various customers, such as Eaton’s. He expanded that skill into a company he formed, Photometric Limited, which he later sold. These problem solving skills will also be fondly remembered by many neighbors and friends in Toronto, Muskoka and elsewhere for whom he was able to resolve a problem they were having with mechanical equipment or a household appliance and repair it for them. He devoted his leisure time to photography, and later, boating, receiving great satisfaction from both. He was deeply involved in the Rotary Club, where he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship, and the Professional Engineers of Ontario. He recently received the Arbor Award from the President of the University of Toronto for his involvement in various university programs. Bud’s family wishes to thank the caring and supportive staff at Lanark Place Retirement Residence for the special care they gave to him in more recent years, and to the Grand River Hospital staff on 5-D South for their tireless efforts. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be planned and announced in the future to celebrate his life. Cremation has taken place. Condolences for the family and, in lieu of flowers, donations to the CNIB or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo 519.745.8445 or www.erbgood.com.
