Passed away peacefully in his sleep, at Winston Parks Special Care Unit, on February 6, 2009, in his 94th year, after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's.
Survived by his loving wife Mavis (nee Kenmir) of 63 years. Dear father of David (Lise), Dennis (Marianne), Sheila (Roberto) Beletic, all of Kitchener, Valerie (Paul) Meyer of Waterloo, and Gary (Penny) of Moorefield. Sadly missed by his two younger brothers Cyril and Jim of Chetwynd, B.C. Fondly remembered by eight grandchildren, Chad, Chris, Pamela, Shannon, Adam, Sean, Rachel, Taryn, and three great-grandchildren, Bryn, Keira, and Nolan. Predeceased by parents George William and Annie (nee Snowdon), his three younger brothers; Tom, Dr. Douglas, and Leslie, and granddaughter Holly.
George was born May 15, 1915 in Ashington, Northumberland, England. He immigrated to Canada, with his family, in 1926 and settled north of Cartwright, Manitoba. He was a farmer until he joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1941. George served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, as a driver mechanic serving in Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium, and Holland. In 1946, he returned to Canada with his new English wife and continued to farm until 1951 when he moved his family to Ontario and settled in the village of Doon. George had a natural talent for carpentry and worked as a master carpenter for several custom home contractors until he retired at age 80.

At George's request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Doon Presbyterian Church, 35 Roos St., Kitchener, on Saturday February 14, 2009 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Angus Sutherland officiating. Interment at Doon Presbyterian Cemetery will take place at a later date.
