<h1>Walter John Wilkes</h1> March 25, 1924 – February 15, 2009. Peacefully in sleep at Grand River Hospital, Kitchener, after a lengthy battle with cancer and heart disease. Walt was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. Born in Windsor, he served his country overseas as a fighter pilot for the RCAF in World War II with 438 Squadron. He was one of the last surviving Typhoon pilots in Canada. Walt also flew Spitfires, but truly loved to take to the air in Hawker Hurricanes. He returned from the war and worked for Ambassador Motors, where he met Patricia McEachren, with whom he shared a life-long love affair and marriage of more than 58 years. He had a varied and successful business career, including the insurance brokerage that carried his name until his retirement in 1986. He was a founding member of the South Windsor Lions Club, a life member of Masonic Great Western Lodge 47 and longtime member of the Royal Canadian Air Force Club, Wing 404 in Kitchener. Walt was predeceased by his parents, Lillie and John Wilkes, sister Elvian and brothers Jim and Bob. He is survived by his wife Pat of Waterloo, sons Jim of Mississauga and John of Fort Pierce, Fla., and daughter Barb Thiel and husband Gary of Waterloo. He is also survived by grandchildren James (Maggie), Jackie (Morgan), Johnathan (Carly), Johanna, John (Jessica) and Jenny (Ryan). He also leaves many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 21 at 1 p.m. at Erb &amp; Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo. Visitation with the family from Noon until 12:45 p.m. the day of service. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorials that celebrate Walt’s life and interests.
