After a brief and determined fight with pancreatic cancer, Bob died on Saturday, August 11, 2007, at the K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital, surrounded by the love and support of his family. He was 76. His fondest wish was to be able to enjoy one more sunset in Southampton overlooking Lake Huron.
Survived by his loving wife Marjorie Carroll-Nelson. Dear father of David of Kitchener, Scott and his wife Cheryl of Heidelberg, Greg and his wife Sue of Waterloo and their mother Gloria Bishop of Waterloo. He will be lovingly remembered by his extended family; step-children John Ulmer and his wife Mary of Kanata, Jane and her husband Peter Huck, Joe and Cathy Ulmer-Miehm of Kitchener, Trudy Carroll and Brad Bender of Ayr, Kathleen and Greg Wynne of Belmont California; grandchildren, Jennifer, Andrew, Chris, Todd, Shelley, Stephanie, Chadd, Steven, Sarah, Jonathan, Tiffany, Michael, Julia, Joey, Kyle, Zack, Erica, Gabby, Julia and Michael. Bob will also be fondly remembered by Melanie Fearon and Donna Churm. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy Dottie Ulmer; sister Reta Anderson and parents Elva (Hanley) and William Nelson.
Bob was retired from the Waterloo Regional Police Services where he had worked for 28 years, beginning his career with the City of Waterloo Police Department. He was a member of First United Church, Waterloo, the Elmira Kiwanis Club, Elmira Curling Club and a former member of the K-W Optimist Club. He especially enjoyed his membership in the Waterloo Regional Police Male Chorus. Along with his father-in-law Russell Legge, he had owned and operated the Shell Service Station on King Street North in Waterloo for a number of years.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Bob with his family at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at First United Church, King and William Streets in Waterloo on Thursday, August 16, 2007, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Rick Hawley officiating. Cremation will follow. Immediately following the service, friends and relatives are invited to Hilliard Hall in the church for refreshments and a time to visit with the family.
