Diagnosed with cancer just prior to his 90th birthday, being true to form Sydney did not disclose his disease to his family until after his birthday celebrations were complete. He fought the good fight and eventually succumbed peacefully, comfortably and with family at his home. Born and raised in Copper Cliff, Ontario, Syd enlisted in the R.C.A.F. during WW II piloting 13 missions with R.A.F. Bomber Command until being shot down over occupied Europe. Evading capture via the “Comète Line” he was returned into service to train new pilots through the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, B.C.A.T.P., Canada’s Aerodrome of Democracy. After the war Sydney graduated the School of Dentistry at the University of Toronto in 1950 initially practicing in New Liskeard, ON, and Thunder Bay, ON in 1956. Then, with the good of the community at heart, Sydney turned to social service and practiced dentistry for the Ministry of Social Services at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital in Thunder Bay and in Southern Ontario at the Oxford Regional Center in Woodstock, Ontario. Retiring to Waterloo in 1987 both Syd and Sheila remained in service to their faith and church and ultimately family, enjoying their golden years with a proud independence and lucidity until the end of their days on this earth ... and their new beginning. Their love lives on. Sydney’s story is now the subject of a book entitled “Lifting the Silence”, co-authored with his son David and will be available in bookstores this fall.
