Peacefully, at the K-W Health Center of Grand River Hospital, Kitchener, Ontario, after a full life.
Recently predeceased by Ruth, his beloved wife of 67 years. Much loved father of Jim (Linda) of Kingston, Bob (Lesley) of Waterloo, and Bill (Beth) of Toronto. Remembered with deep affection by his grandchildren: Susan (Matthew), Sara (James), Todd (Jill), and Cameron. Great-grandfather to Charles, Felix, Anna Ruth and Cecilia. He leaves behind his steadfast sister, Jane Bateman of Windsor. Predeceased by his older brother, Dr. Frank Brien of London.
Wilbert was born and raised in Windsor. After graduating in 1940 from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Wilbert enlisted in the RCAF, Medical Corps. After the war, he joined his father in family practice in Windsor. Wilbert worked in the Chrysler Canada Medical Department from 1969 until his retirement in 1980. To be closer to family, he and Ruth relocated, first to London in 1987 and then to Waterloo in 2002.
A dedicated, respected physician and faithful supporter of the Church, Wilbert was also an avid sports fanparticularly of the Detroit Tigers. Those who knew him will miss his unflagging devotion to Ruth, his love of sports, his gentleness, generosity, and courtesy.
The family is deeply grateful for the compassionate and generous care provided by Dr. Blaine Cruickshank, family physician; Dr. Laurie Sellers, Grand River Hospital, and Ellen Lasby and her Bankside Terrace staff.
A private service was held in Waterloo on Friday, April 9, 2010. The family is most grateful to the Reverend Dr. David Neelands, Dean of Divinity, Trinity College, University of Toronto, and long-time friend of Wilbert, for officiating.
