Obituary of Lawrence Sykes
On Sunday, January 30, 2011 at St. Mary's General Hospital in his 90th year after a short battle with cancer. Beloved wife of Jeanne of 61 years. Devoted father of Barbara (Stephen) Code and Mary Kennedy (Dave). Loving grandpa of Sarah, Laura, and Matthew Code and Jamie, Joshua, Nicholas and Kimberley Kennedy. Sadly missed by brother Donald (Violet) and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers Edwin and Kenneth, and sister Edith.
Larry was a flight lieutenant and flight instructor, serving in Burma during WWII. After graduating from McMaster University, he taught Chemistry and Physics in Hamilton then at Eastwood Collegiate. He completed his career in education as vice-principal at ECI and PHS. Larry was a member of the K-W Granite Club and the Retired Business and Professional Men's Club. As a skilled woodworker, he built many pieces of furniture for his family. Summers spent at the cottage in Haliburton provided many hours of enjoyment. Larry was a lifelong member of Highland Baptist Church.
At Larry's request, cremation has taken place.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Larry with his family during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate his life and faith will take place on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Highland Baptist Church, 135 Highland Rd. W., Kitchener, at 11 a.m. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Interment at Memory Gardens, Breslau.
