Obituary of Nancy Hunter

Nancy died peacefully at home with her family at her side on Thursday, March 10, 2011. Nancy was born in Glasgow, Scotland and moved to Canada in 1955 with her husband Jim. Until recently, Nancy enjoyed painting, reading, swimming, golfing, cycling, Nordic walking, and cross country skiing as well as sitting on the beach in Southampton. She also volunteered at Grand River Hospital for 20 years. Nancy was married to James (Jim) Hunter for almost 57 years. She is survived by her loving husband Jim; daughters, Leslie Heer (Jack), Aileen Finnegan (Gary), and Rhona Karschti (John). She is also survived by ten grandchildren and five (soon to be six) great-grandchildren, Jamie Heer (Sarah) and their children Jenna and Lauren, Jeff Heer (Tracy), Joe Heer (Deanna Wayne-Westman) and Josh Heer, Lisa Dumontier (Marshall) and their children Brooklynn and Avery, Aislyn Jenner (Ryan), and Emma Karschti, Christine Maas (Rob), Jack Finnegan, Lindsay Finnegan and her daughter, Chloe. Nancy is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Jack Abernethy, May Balfour (Syme), Grace Sharpe, Betty Montgomery and Alex Abernethy (Irene) as well as many nieces and nephews. She leaves behind relatives and friends in Scotland, Margaret Hunter, Ena Mason, Recca Wilson and the Lawson Family. Nancy is predeceased by her parents, William and Elizabeth Abernethy; brothers-in-law, John Syme, Bill Hunter, Malcolm Sharpe, Sig Balfour; and sister-in-law, Margaret Abernethy. Special mention to Eileen Longo, Nancy's neighbours, coffee club and book club friends as well as to all the families of Knox Presbyterian Church for their friendship and fellowship through the years. Special thanks to Dr. Sandra Wismer, Grand River Cancer Centre staff, Community Care Access, Paramed (Diane, Mary, Cindy and Wendy) and Greenbrook Pharmacy for all the care and kindness she received during her illness. A very special thanks to her hospice companion, Jamie. A memorial service to celebrate Nancy's life will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, 50 Erb St. W., Waterloo on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Brooke Ashfield and Rev. Linda Ashfield officiating. A reception will follow in the church's fellowship hall. Cremation has taken place. No flowers please as Nancy enjoyed the many flowers she received during her illness.
