Obituary of William Greenwood
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bill on April 1, 2011 at the K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital in his 73rd year.
Cherished husband of Arleen for 45 precious years, dearly loved father of Leslie Greenwood (Ryan Allen) and Catherine Greenwood Grabas (Greg Grabas), and adored Grandpa of grandsons Wilson (6 yrs) and twins Grayson and Gibson (3 yrs).
Beloved big brother of Hugh Greenwood (Gail) and Janice Hunter (Gordon).
Dear uncle to Scott Greenwood (Gina), Kristina Hill (Mike), Brad Hunter, Todd Hunter, Ryan Hunter and Gregg Hunter.
Predeceased by his parents, Ronald and Dorothea Greenwood.
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Bill grew up in Burlington, and attended Queen's University, graduating from Queen's Law School in 1966. Most of his career was spent in Kitchener as a partner in the firm Clement, Eastman, Dreger, Martin and Muenier and subsequently Sims, Clement, Eastman.
Growing up so close to Lake Ontario, Bill began a lifelong love of the water. He swam in it, boated on it, skied on it, windsurfed on it, and fished on it. Eventually he bought a cottage on Georgian Bay in Cognashene, and there he spent his happiest times with family and friends, and sometimes all by himself. Fishing was a favourite activity, and he especially loved fishing with son-in-law Greg.
Family was really important to Bill, and he was a warm and loving Grandpa and the kind of husband every woman should be so lucky as to have.
Bill was a really handy person. He loved to repair things, and when the opportunity arose, to build things.
Though he was generally a pretty quiet guy, he had a way of putting people at ease through his unique sense of humour. He cherished his close friends.
Over the years, he served his community. He was on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, and served as chair for a number of years. An avid curler, he was Secretary of the Athletic Association of Kitchener Waterloo (the Granite Club) and it's President for two terms. Many years were spent serving on the board of the Victorian Order of Nurses as President. He was one of the first directors of the Community Care Access Centre. More recently, he served the musical community as President of the Board of the Millennium Choral Organization. Sincere thanks to all health care professionals who cared for Bill.
Following Bill's wishes, cremation has taken place.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Bill with his family during a memorial visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Friday, April 8 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, April 9 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow in the Fireside Reception Room of the funeral home.
