To all of Ross's family. We are so sorry to hear of Ross's passing. We just heard today. He was such a special person, we always looked forward to Rosco's appearance on our doorstep each fall and his many visits as he spent time awaiting the rest of his hunting crew. The last email I sent to him, was on May 15th to let him know our son would be playing with a band in Cochrane. I thought it was strange that I did not receive a reply, but just thought maybe he was down south visiting family or off on another excursion. Please accept our sincere sympathy's, he will be missed, know that he was loved and appreciated by all that knew him. Please feel free to email / call us at any time if there is anything that we can do for you. Our property is just up the road from his, in fact our son, Louie just put a crop in one of Rosco's fields. Our telephone # 807-937-1937.

We were very sad to learn of Ross’ passing. Both my wife and I had the great pleasure of having Ross in our lives starting in the early 1980’s. Here are some of my recollections from that time. Some say that a picture is worth a thousand words; I’d argue that in the case of Ross Hagen in the early 1980’s it was his car that spoke volumes. I first met Ross in Kapuskasing where he drove into town in his late 70’s blue Ford Maverick, complete with a set of massive steer horns mounted on the roof. There wasn’t another car in town like the Rosco-mobile and there wasn’t another man in town like Ross himself. Just as Ross didn’t care that his car was unique (in a town full of trucks a car alone was out of place) neither did Ross care that he too was unique. As a matter of fact I think he took great pride in being his own man. If you were invited to a legendary meal at Ross’ apartment you had better leave your assumptions at the door. You were just as apt to be served smoked sturgeon and “moose-nose pâté” as you were to get a fancy liqueur cocktail complete with maraschino cherry and decorative umbrella. You also had to expect the unexpected when you arrived unannounced for a visit. There was more than one occasion when I approached his place smelling the wonderful meaty smell of stew cooking only to find Ross boiling down an animal skull trophy, with an onion thrown in to disguise the odour! Then there was the hunting and fishing, there was never weather too foul or an hour too early to head out for a day in the field. And as small as the Maverick seemed on the outside it somehow always contained all the necessary gear to make the day a success. I don’t ever remember Ross packing anything into the car; I think it was just perpetually in a state of readiness. What made him a great hunter and fisherman also made him an excellent law enforcement officer. Together we apprehended moose poachers on the Freddy Flat Road, trout-nappers down the Chain of Lakes Road and duck-runners on the Kapuskasing River. It was always an adventure and there was never a dull moment. So Rosco thanks for being you; you have made my life richer for knowing you. You are sadly missed and never to be replaced. Mark and Sharon Robbins

Wow, how time flies...I remember Ross at Sir Sandford Fleming College when we were there, then up in Northern Ontario and before you know it, we were both working in what is now Nunavut. A few years later we were both in Norman Wells and Ross organized my favorite hunting trip; two weeks on the Keele River.....so amazing! The world will miss your sense of adventure Ross and of course that sense of humour and sly laugh....we'll miss you Rosco!

To the Hagen Family: I worked with Ross for five years at the Department of Renewable Resources in Norman Wells. I was very saddened to hear of his passing. I vividly recall his hospitality, in particular numerous BBQs over at Ross's place where we spent hours talking about hunting, especically for mountain sheep, and many other topics outdoors. At the office, I remember Ross's dry sense of humour as well as being very tenacious, especially once he got a specific project between his teeth. Although his life was relatively short, he did indeed experience what this country has to offer in terms of wilderness and nature and which most people can only dream about. The Hagen Family; My wife, Anna and myself would like to pass on to you our condolences on the passing of a son and brother. I have known Ross for close to thirty years and the past number of years we worked closely together in the Fort Simpson Region. Not only that but we did manage to get out hunting a few times for caribou in the Great Bear Area and hunting moose in and around the Fort Liard area. Even though we had not seen each other for the past four years or so, we kept in touch usually by email and by phone. I am going to miss Ross's emails and going to miss him personally, he was a good friend and fellow officer. We are going to miss you buddy!

Please accept our most sincere condolences at the passing of Ross; a loyal Son, Brother, Uncle, Friend, and Employee of the Fort Simpson Region Northwest Territories. I had the privilege of knowing Ross prior to his arrival in the region, and was honoured to have him join our team in Fort Liard as a member of our extended "northern family". His sunny disposition, commitment to the job, and never failing sense of humour will be forever remembered. Paul Kraft and Family Superintendent (retired), Fort Simpson Region

When I got the news of Ross's passing I was sad and shocked, as I am sure everyone was. Yet when I saw his picture and his smile, it made me smile because this was the Ross that I always known and had grown up with as my best childhod friend - he had that same warm, happy smile that I remembered. It brought many memories of the great childhood experiences we had together - bringing home "critters" to keep at the Hagen house (I know that my parents would like to say thank you for keeping them at your house), the fishing / camping trips to Durham, the holidays up at Honey Harbour, the days on the Cameron wrestling team, and just generally being kids growing up together. What Ross experienced in real life after we went our separate ways I only experienced on Discovery channel. I was often envious of him and his lifestyle. I would often proudly tell people that by best friend when I was a kid was one of those people from the Discovey channel. He will always be my best childhood friend and I am thankful to have had that opportunity. My deepest sympathy. You will be in my family's thoughts and prayers.

Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. Roscoe and I started out our careers in Kapuskasing and we both attended the Deputy Conservation Officer course at the same time. Whether we worked on aerial moose surveys or tagging Lake Sturgeon, we had a lot of laughs and adventures that usually involved hunting, fishing, or the occasional beverage. I regarded Ross as the senior technician in those days and I did consider him a mentor. He went on to pursue an enforcement career in the NWT when things in the MNR were a little tight with the job situation. Over the years, we kept in touch, although, sadly, on an infrequent basis. Roscoe will be missed.

Cora, Jim and Ronnie (and families) I am so very sorry for your loss. My memories of Ross go back to those summer days at the trailer - with Ross catching every frog and snake he could! It was no surprise when Ross chose the career he did. I'm sure you have many wonderful memories that you will treasure. Again, my deepest sympathy. Sandy
