Department of Philosophy, University of Waterloo posted a condolence
Friday, June 24, 2011
Dear Margaret, Kate, Leslie and family, The Department of Philosophy was deeply saddened to learn of Angus's death. He was a brilliant scholar, and an exceptional colleague. In the Department, at the University of Waterloo and in the scholarly world generally, he will be sorely missed. We are already receiving notes of condolence from Angus's colleagues at other universities. Their contents are worth sharing with you: Vincent Colapietra, Penn State, writes, "This is terribly sad news. Angus was so wickedly bright yet so deeply decent (an all too rare combination of qualities)." Mark Migotti, Calgary, "join[s] the condolers on the sad occasion of Angus's death. He was a warm and generous soul with a fine and discriminating mind." Angus's long-time collaborator, Herbert Saatkamp, the President of Richard Stockton College of New Jersey emailed "Such sad news. Angus and I worked together on Santayana scholarship from the mid 1970s and co edited "Overheard in Seville" for many years. Hard loss." Finally, David Hildebrand, University of Colorado Denver, Director of Communications for the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy writes, "How very sad... My condolences. A real loss for our community." We are extremely grateful that we were able to celebrate Angus's many accomplishments with him at the departmental awards reception in April, and that Kate and Leslie were able to accept Angus's extremely well-deserved Distinguished Professor Emeritus honour at Thursday's convocation. Sincerely, Tim Kenyon Chair, Department of Philosophy, University of Waterloo

We express our deepest sympathies to Marg and the family. Angus was a great friend and will be sorely missed. He made the world a better place. His exceptional scholarly work, pursued over all those many years, continues to be an inspiration to all of us, younger and older. A great ski companion in the middle years, Angus was a real boon to the Pure Math Department at a time when we needed a steady man at the tiller. More personally, he was a great encourager to our daughter in her philosophical career. We are cheered by his many qualities.

Dear Leslie, This is what I know. It doesn't get any easier, but you do get used to it. If you need a friend to help you through this, you know who to call.
