Like many others on here I was part of Don's Home Hardware family. I had the great pleasure of working with Don closely over the last 6 years. I will miss our walkabouts around our Centre. Don had a great sense of humour, amazing memory, a caring heart and a great way of being a boss and also a mentor / friend. I learned so much from Don and I feel fortunate to have known him.

I just returned from holidays, and in going through my mail saw the note about Don's passing. I am shocked and sadden to hear this. He always had a big smile and a firm hand shake whenever we'd see him at the Market or when he visited our store as he did a few times. If you were to look up the word " class " in the dictionary; I think it would be fitting to have Don's name there. He was a true gentleman and will be truly missed!

My heart goes out Don's family and to the team at Home Hardware. I had the good fortune of meeting Don during my time of employment at the City of Wetaskiwin. While it was though business that we met, he quickly became a very good and trusted friend. Don was a very caring, kind and friendly fellow that was fair and honest to do business with. We worked together to work out a deal between the City of Wetaskiwin and Home Hardware regarding expensive infrastructure issues. While Don was acting in the best interest of Home Hardware has was also very concerned that it was fair to the City as well and a deal was easily struck. While Don could get down to business, his ability to keep track of and sincerely care about Home Hardware's thousands of employees and associates on a personal level simply amazed me. He really cared about each and every person and their families. We grew to be very good friends and I looked forward to his friendly voice saying "Welcome Home", his laughter and firm hand shake whenever he came to Wetaskiwin or I visited him in St. Jacobs. What a great guy that will be deeply missed! "Cheers" Don, until we meet again...

My heartfelt condolences to Don's family and friends Like so many others I was a part of Don's HH family. Don hired me in Wetaskiwin some 27 years ago. He was the first person to welcome me into the warehouse, with a smile and a joke and yes a very firm hand shake. In the years I had the pleasure of knowing Don I don't think he ever met me (or anyone else) with out a cheery hello, smile and the handshake. Don's generosity with his time ,knowledge , and sincere caring for the people around him will truly be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing Don.

I will never forget Don and how he was so generous with his time. I bought my store in 2008 with no retail and no hardware experience. Don was one of the first guys I met. He instilled the confidence in me that I would be successful and for me to carry on the Home Hardware tradition of having great stores with great people. Every market after that he would always say hi and ask how things were going. I knew him for a short time but his impact will last a lifetime.

Our Deepest Sympathy to Don's family. Don often visited us in the UK and was always willing to give us some help and advice when asked. He was a real gentleman and much to his embarrassment, a bit of a celebrity with our retail members. Don taught me several useful lessons in life and I remember several of his catch phrases including the following: There is no such thing as problems, just challenges. Interview for attitude, train for skill. I can't understand, when I got on the plane in Canada I didn't have an accent, and now once I get to England everyone says "that's a great accent you have there." Don had a tremendous sense of humour and a great system for remembering everyone’s birthday. He would always remind the staff here at Home Hardware of people’s birthdays just in case they were trying to avoid buying the cakes! Don always had a smile on his face and was one of the most positive people you could ever wish to meet. Don will be very sadly missed, not only as a business colleague, but also as a dear friend to myself and family. On behalf of everyone at Home Hardware in the UK, we express our deepest sympathy to his family and friends in Canada. He will be sorely missed both sides of the Atlantic.

We met Don on the Home Hardware Study Tour 2010. Don, being who he was, looked after us all very well. We were all impressed at how happy he always appeared and so enjoyed what he was doing, thereby making it fun for everyone around him. Each day he said Good morning this morning and we shared a great joke with these lines, which he too enjoyed and had many laughs. We are very saddened to learn of Don's sudden passing. He leaves us all with wonderful memories and his beautiful spirit shall live on. May God Bless and keep you in this difficult time. Harold & Diana Oliver, High Prairie, Alberta.

Our deepest sympathies to Don's family. I enjoyed working with Don as he would always ask questions to make you think more about what you said. Don would look forward to the details you would find from the questions he asked. After you gave Don an update, he would always say "Thanks". Don always liked you to participate, "I do encourage you to help where you can.". He would end many of his messages with "Cheers" -- a sign of appreciation, and also a humble thank you. The first thing Don ever said to me was "Welcome Home" when he hired me four years ago. It was a heartfelt welcome to Home Hardware and his family, and it is a sentiment I will always cherish and never forget. Don was a colleague, coach and a friend. He was one of the most positive people I will ever meet. He taught me lessons in life and business that I will always practice and model myself after. Don, you are sorely missed by me and your Burford family. Thank you for everything you did for all of us.

Don It is hard to believe that the person who was only an email or a call away is suddenly no longer . Don hired me 31 years ago , I was still in high school in Nova Scotia . Over the many years he led by example , a pillar and definition of dedication , hard working and fairness while always having an open door policy . There was only one thing that he enjoyed more than his work and that was working with the people around him . His firm hand shake ( very firm hand shake :) ) was legendary with all staff and anyone who came in contact with him . On many occasions he would say " good time to travel a dusty road " which meant his throat was dry and a cold beverage would taste some nice . Don you were a terrific boss , a good man and proud to say a better friend . You will be missed but never forgotten and you will continue to teach us for many years . My deepest and most sincere condolences to Don's family . RE

Don was always friendly, always helpful, always smiling, always a very positive prescence whenever we had contact. Just this last spring market, late on Tuesday afternoon, he personally escorted me through the back warehouses looking for boxes to pack product that we were shipping home. Never a hint that this might be the least bit inconvenient for him. My parents especially appreciated his patience and helpfulness on the many Home Hardware Study tours. We are very sad to hear of his passing. He will be greatly missed.

Dear family and friends of Don, First let me say that Don will always be remembered through his work with Home Hardware, he worked and influenced many different departments including all the Distribution Centre's. I have personally worked for and with Don for many years. He was always available for guidance and a friendly word of encouragement. All of his staff new he was only an email away, as he claimed "to answer all emails within in an hour" and he always did! Don liked catch phrases some of his favourites were.. "takin care of business", "engines are revvin in 2011", "chat time", "walk-about" and of course his all time favorite "get-r-done". Don will truly be missed, and I will always be proud to refer to him as my friend and boss......as he definetly was. JP

My most heartfelt condolences to Don's family on his sudden passing. Don was a great guy and no doubt it’s still such a shock. I worked with Don at Home Hardware for 11 years and had the pleasure of getting to know him outside of work, too. Our friendship started over an appreciation of wine. I used to organize company tours to Niagara and Don came every year. He'd make a beeline for the back of the bus but I'd make him sit upfront and would defer to him for his expert advice - and tease him a whole lot, too. Don had a wonderful sense of humour and I think he really enjoyed those trips to the wineries with his HH buddies. Over the years we shared a few bottles together over dinners at great restaurants and wine tasting evenings hosted by friends. Unfortunately, we lost touch after I left HH but I was able to keep tabs on him through our mutual friends. And, every now and then, he would unexpectedly pop up in my life, like most recently this past winter at my brother's visitation. It was wonderful to see him. I will always remember Don's smile. I can't recall every seeing anything but a happy face on this man. He was the epitome of the term "gentleman" and will be greatly missed by many, many people -- likely all over the world. I will raise a few glasses in your honour, Don. Rest in peace. Your friend, Jan.

Our condolences to the Kirck Family, We will sincerely miss Don, he showed a genuine interest in our family, regularly asking about our two sons. With that said, Don was a big fan of 570AM News and was amused that one of our sons prefers hamburgers at every meal! In Don's gentlemanly caring ways he even reminded Jamie when it was time to plan something special for my birthday and our anniversary year after year. And at each market, Don would greet us with a kind, warm hello and a full smile. Don will be missed and not forgotten. Sincerely, Darlene, Jamie, Chris and Nicholas Pope

To Don's brothers and sister and their families:
I am sorry to hear of Don's passing. I knew Don when he lived in Nova Scotia many years ago. Don invited me to go to the Home Hardware Christmas party with him one year. It was during the dance, which had more or less just got started, that he said that we had to leave. I asked him why would he want to leave early, and he said that the rest of the employees would have a more enjoyable time if the boss wasn't there. That was very thoughtful of him as it was his party too. I have met him many times in the intervening years, as I married someone who works at the warehouse in Debert, and Don always made it a point to come over and say hello at the Christmas party. Don will be missed.

To Don's family: I was so sorry to hear of Don's passing. He was way to young. Your family and the MacDonalds were always very close and in someways always felt like an extension of our family. It's difficult when your family starts to get smaller but always hold on to the good times. I love you all. Jan
