Obituary of Lydia Froehlich

LYDIA AUGUSTA FROEHLlCH, NEE FREYER, known as "Omi" by everyone who loved her, was born July 10, 1912 and died July 29, 2011. Her prayers finally answered, she has gone to meet her Maker, Saviour and Lord in her 100th year. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, pre-deceased by her parents and eight siblings and her beloved grandson, Marcel Guderian. She leaves behind to mourn: her only child, Evelyn Guderian, her "favourite son-in-law" Walter Guderian, her granddaughter Angie Holloway (David) and her grandson Douglas Guderian (Karen), as well as six great-grandchildren: Rachel and Daley Holloway and Bianca, Sierra, Amber and Marina Guderian, and many nieces and nephews in Alberta, British Columbia and Germany. She survived the horrors of two World Wars in the Bloodlands of Europe. She was born in a small German community in what is now Poland, was forcibly evacuated to Russia, then back to Poland and then was part of the long trek of refugees into Germany during the winter of 1945. She lived in Evingsen, Nordrheinwestfalen until 1954 and then immigrated into Kitchener. Later she moved to Toronto, where she worked until her retirement in 1977, when she returned to Kitchener, and lived for nearly thirty years in her cozy apartment on 64 Benton Street. "The best time of her life" she called it. Lydia was an active member of the Christian Fellowship Church in Waterloo. She continued to be a powerful prayer warrior even into her last months. Her faith comforted and sustained her. She made friends wherever she lived, not the least in her last two years in People Care in Tavistock where the staff treated her kindly and lovingly. Many thanks to all of you. In her long life, "Omi" had many interests. She spoke German, Polish and English and attempted to learn French in her 60's. She also mastered Macrame and her artistic original pieces grace the homes of her family. She was a wonderful cook and pastry chef… her "Hoernchen" were famous among her friends. She loved to entertain and enjoyed travelling. Her final trip was a long time in coming, but now she has reached her desired destination. We trust she has heard her "Well done, good and faithful servant" and are thankful that she is now at peace. Visitation will take place at Christian Fellowship Church, 315 Northlake Drive, Waterloo, on Thursday, August 4 from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Pastor Kurt Fischer will officiate. Interment at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo will be followed by a reception in the fellowship hall at the church.
