Obituary of John Walker

John Stewart "Jack" Walker, a veteran of the Second World War, business owner, community leader and public servant died Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Nithview Home, New Hamburg, Ontario. He was 91. Jack was born in Regina Saskatchewan and remained a long-term resident of Regina, spending the last 10 years of his life living with family in St. Agatha, Ontario. He attended Central Collegiate in Regina and served with the RAF and RCAF overseas during the Battle of Britain. On his return to Canada he trained Commonwealth Forces until the end of World War II. As a realtor, he established Walker Agencies. He worked with McCallum Hill during the development of the Hillsdale area. Jack served as a Regina City Councilor. As Director of Development for the City of Regina he shaped growth for the city he so loved. His community service included the Regina Air Cadet Corp., Regina Police Boys Band, Luther College, St. John's United Church and the Buffalo Days Celebrations. An avid hunter and fisherman, Jack enjoyed summers in the lakeside communities of Regina Beach and Lebret Saskatchewan. Jack and Doreen (Rae) were married in 1942 and enjoyed 67 years of marriage before Doreen's passing in 2009. They have four children, Dawn (Tom) Douthwaite of Abbotsford, BC, Bud (Shirley) Walker of St. Agatha, ON, Scott (Denyse) Walker of Winnipeg MB and Richard (Whitney) Walker of Calgary AB. Jack was predeceased by his wife Doreen, his sister Florence (Smyth), his daughter-in-law Linda (nee Surtees), and his granddaughter Bernice (Morris). He is survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great great grandchild, nieces and cousins. To honor their request, a joint Memorial Service and Internment for Jack and Doreen Walker will be held Saturday, Sept. 24th. 2011 at The Chapel at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, 815Assinboine Ave. East Regina at 10:30 AM. Internment with follow in the Veterans section of the cemetery. A reception will be held at Wascana Manor, 960 Assiniboine Ave. East.
