As an older student I wished to start a career in geology but was told by the Dean of Science Admissions I was not appropriate material for the U of W. After some cajoling, he said that if the professor responsible for geological admissions was willing to accept me, he would grant me the privilege of becoming a geology student. Putting my best face forward I went over to the Geology Department to do battle and met Gwylim. Without batting an eyelash or asking any questions he grabbed the admissions document from me, signed it and I was in! I plan to retire in 3 years from the career Gwylim prepared me for. More important than geology, however, Gwylim had an important influence on shaping my future tastes in single malt Scotch.

As do so many professors, Gwilym had a strong influence on many young professionals and their careers. As an uncommitted first year student at Waterloo taking a range of courses, I became enthraled with my introductory earth science course that he taught, with his entertaining and captivating presentations on the spectrum of geology, from plate tectonics to economic geology. I asked one day about a summer job in geology before changing my program to Earth Sciences and he provided me with a long list of industry contacts . . . one of which panned out. I spent the summer flying around in float planes mapping with an exploration party in northwestern Ontario, and never looked back. When young students come by to ask for career advice and leads for summer work, I'm reminded of my start in geology thanks to Gwilym.

Gwilym had a dignified and confident presence: the appearance and comportment of royalty, we thought - and a wry, eccentric sense of humour that always left us either in stitches, or scratching our heads! He had a sparkling enthusiasm for all that life had to offer; a conversation with Gwilym was never superficial, but always lively, saturated with questions, speculations, propositions and even absurdities. And he was a formidable opponent in a game of miniature golf! Gwilym, we know you rest in peace, and we will miss you dearly.
