Carol Hurlbut

Obituary of Carol K. Hurlbut

Surrounded by the love and in the presence of her husband Ivan, daughter Cathy and son Ian, Carol died at Sunnyside Home in Kitchener, on Monday, November 28, 2016. Beloved wife of Ivan for 51 wonderful years and dear Mother of Catherine Wittke (Rob) and Ian Hurlbut (Mary Calarco). Greatest Nana ever to Caitlin and Isabel (Wittke) and Benjamin (Hurlbut). She is also remembered by her sister-in-law Helen Hurlbut; nieces Louise (Dave Knechtel), Barb (Jim Bearinger), nephew Scott Hurlbut and their families. Predeceased by her mother and father Grace and Carl Tyack and brother-in-law Paul Hurlbut. Carol was born in Ottawa and spent some time living in British Columbia before her family returned to Kitchener. She attended KCI and Eastwood and continued her friendships with many of these ladies, celebrating at their reunions. Her family were active members of Trinity United Church and it was here that she met a young man named Ivan. In 1965 they married, and the rest as they say is an incredible history. Adventures in parenthood never phased this dynamic couple, as they remained active members of various community groups, including Trinity Church. They also enjoyed travelling together to destinations around the world with some of their closest friends. Carol’s energy and personality could fill a room! She always had a hug for anyone who needed it and was known for welcoming people around the table. Entertaining with Ivan was done with ease, whether it was a family gathering or a large group. Everyone loved being Carol’s friend, she was fun and easy to get to know. In more recent years suffering from Alzheimer’s, Carol was well taken care of by the staff at Sunnyside. As Carol and her family travelled this unexpected path together, they continued to be grateful for everything that the team at Sunnyside did right up until the end. Truly some memories never fade away for with every raising of her eyebrow or twinkle in her eye we knew (without words) that she loved us as much as we loved her. It was a privilege to say a last good-bye to our wife, mom and nana. Friends and relatives are invited to share their memories of Carol with her family at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo on Friday, December 2 from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm.
