Very sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I first met him when we had a health promotion and aging grant with UBC colleagues, funded by NHRDP in the mid-1990s. In 2007 he invited me to U Waterloo to be a Shlegal-Hallman Visiting Professor. Later, we met at CAG and TVN conferences. He did a marvelous job in conceiving and operationalizing the U Waterloo-Shlegal initiative. He will be sorely missed by Canadian gerontology.

I was blessed to have Mike as a prof at Windsor and considered him a friend. He guided me through some difficult times during those years. I last some him at our class of 1970 reunion and we never missed a beat. He is the one responsible for guiding me into the education field, a vocation lasting 26 years. I met he and Gino at the Montreal Olympics and they took me into the village. I express my condolences to family and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

My sincere condolences to Jacquie and the Sharratt family. Mike was my friend,a research colleague, and a mentor while I was at Waterloo as a faculty member. Although I took a position at the University of Saskatchewan 11 years ago and our paths didn't cross often, when we met, it was like no time had passed. He always made me feel welcome to be back at Waterloo. He was certain to indicate his interest in what I was doing and to tell me about his latest project with older adults. I will miss his presence but take great pride in his contributions to the lives of family, friends, students and colleagues. He leaves a legacy of physical accomplishments at the University but the real impact is his influence on so many people that will remember him fondly.

Dear Jackie
I am sure you do not remember me as we likely met in the late 70's. I am sorry that I can not attend the memorial, I now live in eastern Ontario and with the winter driving I felt it was just too uncertain to commit to the trip.
I want to tell you how sad I am and that my thoughts are with you and your family. Mike was a very good and loyal friend and I cherish my memories of him. Throughout his career I had the greatest respect for him and also valued his friendship. He was a kind, gentle person and unlike so many in academia, he did not have an ego and was not self-promoting. When we met I looked enjoyed the casual, honest and friendly conversations. His attitude and personality provided a calming atmosphere in every interaction.
I have heard from a number of individuals who had worked with Mike in various committees and initiatives and they all convey as similar impression, that he was not merely respected academically but more important, was respected as a person of integrity.
warm regards

Johanna and I were so sorry to hear of the passing of Mike Sharratt. We remember him with great affection and respect. Mike was a colleague who back in the 1970's was one of the pioneers in the promotion of exercise for cardiac patients. He also made a major contribution to the formation of the Canadian Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (CACPR), a multi-disciplinary organization for practitioners in this field. Mike's input as a Founding Member and later as President was of enormous value and his kind, thoughtful and generous personality made him universally loved and respected by all who came in contact with him.
His life was a lesson to all of us. Our deepest sympathy to the family.

Hello Jacqueline and family,
My sincerest condolences to you and the family. I had the pleasure of working with Mike for the past year at the villages. He always made us laugh and I remember how he made me feel when I joined the Schlegel family. He was so much a part of the family and he will be missed by so many people who he had influenced in both their careers. I so sorry for your loss but I do know how much he loved his family and as private as he was, he was a special person who I will always remember how he made me feel and that was inclusive. Rest in peace Mike and thanks for all you did for all of us villagers

Mike was an exceptional man who we feel privileged to have known as a leader, teacher, colleague and friend. During our days at UW, Mighty Mike inspired and motivated us to achieve our best potential. He captured our interest through his teaching and gave us opportunities, through Hardy Hearts and research collaborations, to develop skills that we continue to use in our professional careers. He believed in us and gave us the confidence to believe in ourselves.
After his alleged "retirement" in 2007, he continued to be a visionary in his ground breaking work establishing the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging. He joked with us that the RIA was the retirement "sandbox" he built for himself to play in when he wasn't getting his butt kicked playing Scrabble with Jacquie.
Words cannot express the shock and devastation we feel learning of Mike's death. Our thoughts are with you Jacquie and your family at this time.
Mighty Mike's legacy lives on in all of us who were fortunate to learn from and laugh with him. He will not be forgotten.
All our love and support

Heartfelt condolences to you and your family, Jacquie. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Mike was one of the 'titans' of academia and I have many fond memories of him, both personal and academic. One that stands out for me was Mike's relaxed, but increasingly puzzled reaction as he quizzed our 4th year class (hotshots everyone, with 3 whole years under our belts) on basic 'everybody should know' questions about physiology to see where we stood, and what he was going to have to work with for the rest of the term. This was Day 1 of Mike's cardiac physiology course - one that we were all excited about because of his stature and reputation as a professor and an athlete - but it did not start off well. Question after basic question was answered incorrectly, to slight pauses and raised eyebrows from Mike who would then look around the room and calmly ask 'Anybody else have an answer?' This went on for some time and the lights slowly came on for each of us, with no histrionics from Mike, that we weren't close to where we thought we were, and certainly nowhere near where we needed to be. It was a great wake-up call, and a great teaching moment - delivered with kindness - that I remember to this day. One of many stories I'm sure, about the lasting impact Mike had on those fortunate enough to have come within his orbit. I will miss him.

I am so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. During my time as a graduate student at UW, Mike taught me in my first graduate course and I still remember my oral exam in his office which by the end became a conversation about physiology in which Mike made me believe in my abilities.
He was a great teacher and a person that I always looked up to with respect for how he was with people. I also remember his enthusiasm for our Devil's Glen graduate ski trips and the fun I had being able to ski a bit with him.
I will always have great memories of and respect for Mike and what he gave to us students. I am so very sad for this loss to your family and to our U W AHS community.

We were in contact at least yearly over the ensuing yrs. Mike was a classy man in every respect. I remember fondly our years on Deans and Executive Councils at the University of Waterloo. We were almost always on the same page on issues and I thoroughly enjoyed working with him. Keeping people healthy rather than fixing them after they were broken, the mission of AHS and Mike personally, resonated with me.
I also remember the squash games! We were well-matched and it did not matter who won – it was the joy of competing that mattered.
