John and Catherine, Heather and Brian lived next door to us on Cardill Crescent for about 6 years. Our families became and remain very close, more than 50 years later. John’s sense of humour (“I have a wee joke to tell you”) and impish grin are just a part of the warm memories we have of John. The entire Prentice clan is in our thoughts and prayers.

My condolences to Catherine, his children and especially his Granddaughter Kelly whom I continue to see at the A Touch of Scotland. It was one of the most remarkable coincidences in life that his childhood friend from Leith Tommy Burns who died in WWII in the Merchant Navy in 1943 which John also served in. Unknown to John, Tommy had a niece who is a good friend of mine in Toronto and we would meet in the shop on the river and an innocent conversation brought so much raw emotion out of John. My friend had no idea who John was and I had to drag her into the store to speak with John but it was a remarkable union by any measure.
I was a regular shopper at the old shop since the mid 80's because John had all the goodies that I gravitated to his shop and the pleasant conversations that always ensued with him and Catherine. I will miss this wonderful wee gentleman who worked hard and was so devoted to his lovely wife and family. Will try and make it on Monday to give this wonderful decent man his due.

My condolences to Catharine and family, John was a great person to know, I felt very privileged to have so many conversations with him both at dancing and at Kearney Lake cottage, (Jack and Iris Keith) along with the other country dancers, How he hated the mosquitos, He told me about his involvement in raids with the Royal Marines involving a return to the escort ship where they had "lifted" a piano onto their assault craft and someone was playing ragtime tunes as they were tossed about by the waves. He never lost his soft Edinburgh accent and was always cheerful and fun to be around. I was always impressed how smoothly he would jump off the concrete surrounding his swimming pool and effortlessly dive into the water.

Leslie, Rhona and I were sad to hear the news. Our mum and dad (Jim and Nancy Hunter - deceased - 2015 and 2011) knew Mr. Prentice and growing up the three of us have memories of seeing him and visiting the store in St. Jacobs for our Scottish treats.
Through the years our families lives have connected several times. Heather and I were born the same week in the same hospital and later, we obtained the swing set the Prentices had in their back yard.
As adults, Heather and Aileen, both work for Equitable Life. Aileen has been able to keep up to date on her parents through Heather. In the later years, before our dad passed away our dad liked to hear how the Prentices were doing.

I'm sorry to hear of your father's passing. My parents Jim and Nancy Hunter often spoke of both your parents and they shared many good memories together. I remember stopping in often at the store for a wee blether.
Please know that the Hunter Clan is thinking of all of you.

Was saddened to hear about John passing. A long time (and very dear) friend of my parents, John will be missed. Many years ago he gave me his old set of bagpipes when he knew he would never play again....after a little dust down it wasn't long before they were singing again - a most beautiful set of "Glens", the envy of many another piper. I think of John often when I play. Godspeed Mr. Prentice.
