Donald Knickle

Obituary of Donald Sydney Stuart Knickle

Passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, on Wednesday July 12, 2017 at the Village of Winston Park, Kitchener at the age of 93, with his family at his side.

Survived by his children Heather Knickle (Don Bowman), and David Knickle (Nancy Roy). Grandfather to Carolyn and Adam, David and Becky, and great-grandfather to Matthew, Derek, Jack, and Bill. Step-grandfather to Melissa, Jesse, Brian and their children.

He was always a loving father and kind friend to his family and friends.

Predeceased by his former wife Josephine Stewart, his second wife Norma Hay McKinley, his parents Hilda Corkum, Sydney Knickle, his sister Doris Knickle (Flikke) and brother-in-law Elias Flikke.

Don had a wonderful sense of adventure. After growing up in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, he spent time in the Canadian Air Force and then attended Acadia University and the Nova Scotia Technical College (now part of Dalhousie University) to become a Mechanical Engineer. His engineering career was spent working for Canadian Industries Limited in Nobel, Ontario and McMasterville, Quebec, then for Canadian General Electric on several nuclear engineering projects in Ontario and Manitoba.

After retirement Don renewed his interest in flying small aircraft, exploring the Peterborough area by car and canoe, and did some travelling with friends.

His recent years were spent socializing at the Village of Winston Park Retirement and Long-Term Care facility in Kitchener where he made many friends and immensely enjoyed many activities such as choir, craft class, outings by car, walks by the gardens and fish pond, pub, and suppers with family in the library. He also enjoyed exploring Winston Park, joking with staff members, and being the tester for various bright nail polish colours.

Special thanks to the nursing staff and personal support workers at Winston Park who always provided the very best of care, particularly during his last few days with us. Thanks also to Dr Ryan McKee for his caring support.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date for family and friends, and burial in Lunenburg Nova Scotia in September.

Condolences for the family and donations to Diabetes Canada or Doctors Without Borders may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street S. Waterloo at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
