I am quite late in learning about Father Wahl's death, but I am no less saddened by this news. I took the courses The Ancient Near East and Medieval Europe with Father Wahl while an undergraduate at the University of Waterloo. I am now a university professor myself, where I use several of Dr. Wahl's teaching practices relating to lecturing, testing, and essay writing. I frequently reflect on my time in Dr. Wahl's classes, which played a very important role in my own development as both an academic and a person. I wish that my program of study would have permitted me to take more of his classes.

I just learned this past weekend in Sept 2018 of Father Jim Wahl's passing. I was attending the St. Jerome's University for an Investiture ceremony. Father Wahl was a sweet, kind man, and an excellent enthusiastic teacher. He taught me Ancient Roman Law, and The Origins of Common Law at SJU. When I was accepted to law school I stopped in to see him across Westmount Road at the Resurectionist residence. He had such a wonderful spirit and sense of humour. Whenever our paths crossed, it always served as a bright spot in my day. He will be deeply missed.
My deepest condolences to all of his family, friends, and colleagues.

Thank you Father Jim for your friendship, mentorship, prayers and example in faith. Though distance prevented us from more frequent visits you will always remain in my heart and those of my family. The kids loved time spent with you! May God bless you and treasure you for all your efforts in His name. May His perpetual light shine upon you as you rest in His peace. God love you.

One of the historians I studied under in university & well remembered for his humour & his humanity. Learned so much in just 3 courses with him. In many ways, the man I became is because of men like him & other profs.
Once I picked a topic, & he said what he thought the thesis should be. I did my research & saw an alternative answer that disagreed with that viewpoint - still got the A (and a note about doing research well). I used that anecdote for years in my community work here in Toronto.
He sowed a seed.
Forever grateful for his role in my life.
Thank you Father Wahl.

Fr. Wahl was one of my history professors when I studied at the University of Waterloo from '97 - '02. His classes were some of my favourite because of the joy he took in teaching came through. I will never forget taking "History of the Papacy" with him as he wasn't above poking a little fun at the sometimes strange history of the Catholic church. He truly made the study of history something special.

Father Wahl was my thesis advisor and professor when I was at University. We met numerous times as he was guiding me along my educational journey. He had time when you needed it; endless ideas for advice to make things better or to try. I enjoyed his teaching; his wisdom and most of all his kindness and gentle nature. May he rest in peace. All the best Father Wahl.

Father Wahl was an amazing teacher, professor, brilliant academic, academic advisor, mentor and friend. He made history come to life, he could cut through things and get to the root of the problem and he was an adoptive parent for more students than we will ever truly know. I envision him sailing on his boat in the next world. Thank you for sharing Jim with us.

To the Wahl family, I was a classmate of Jimmy's from 1946 to 1957 first at Sacred Heart and then at St. Jeromes
I was a part of that North ward group of kids.Jimmy and I were altar boys together until we left grade 8. He and Joe Palubeski always talked about being priests and both achieved their goals and both great academics and both brilliant. In reading his obituary I am impressed by his achievements in his calling and his total committment to serving God and his fellow man. His smile in the picture tells me he had joy in his life and his life's work.
May God richly bless him in his new life. My condolences to Johnny and the Wahl family.
Sincerely, Terry Kowalski ( Wilhelm Street.)

Father Jim was a large part of our family in Tottenham, Ontario. He often said Mass in my sister Peggy's living room, and visited us at Easter and Christmas. We loved him very much. May he rest in peace. We will miss his big smile.
